## About Potaissa Legionary Fortress

On Dealul Cetății (Fortress Hill), above Turda, lies the fortress where the Fifth Legion Macedonica was stationed, brought here in 168 from Troesmis, in Dobruja, under Emperor Marcus Aurelius. It was one of the two legions that defended Roman Dacia, and its base remained in use until the Roman administration withdrew in the 270s. The enclosure measures about 573 × 408 m, more than 23 ha, with bastions at the corners and a gate on each side. The ancient town of Potaissa grew up around it.

Systematic excavations began in 1971, led by the historian Mihai Bărbulescu, and uncovered the headquarters building (principia), barracks and the baths, covering more than 2,000 m², the largest military baths known in Dacia. Between 2016 and 2024 the fortress was restored and laid out as an archaeological park with European funds, and in 2024 it joined the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the "Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Dacia" site.

### What you can see

Of the more than 23 ha, only about one hectare has been uncovered; the rest of the enclosure is under grass. The foundations of the principia have been rebuilt, and metal frames suggest the volume of the building. The baths, where most of the original walls survive, are covered by a steel structure and seen from suspended walkways. Paths lead to the fortress gates, the bastions and the paved Roman roads. The finds from the site are on display at the Turda History Museum, in the town centre.

### Good to know

The archaeological park was handed over in 2024, but until summer 2026 it could only be visited by appointment. The official public opening took place on 11 September 2026; the fortress's own opening hours are not published separately, so it is worth phoning the museum before you go. The photos below date from 2010, before the restoration.

## Don't miss
