## About Callatis Citadel

Callatis was founded towards the end of the 6th century BC by settlers from Heraclea Pontica, on the southern coast of Dobruja. Since Heraclea was itself a colony of Megara, Callatis is the only city of Dorian origin on Romanian soil. It lived from grain and seaborne trade, struck silver and gold coins, and around the middle of the 4th century BC surrounded itself with a wall of large limestone blocks. For several years after 310 BC it held out against a siege by Lysimachus, one of the successors of Alexander the Great.

From the 1st century BC the city came under Roman rule, but kept its Greek language and institutions. Attacked by the Goths in the 3rd century and rebuilt under Diocletian and Constantine the Great, it became a Christian centre with a bishop in late antiquity. The Avar and Slav raids of the early 7th century brought it to an end. Modern Mangalia was built right on top of it, and the ancient harbour and part of the city now lie under the sea.

### What you can see

The best-preserved part is the north-eastern corner of the city, on the clifftop: almost 90 metres of the late Roman wall, more than three metres thick, with two of its towers still visible today. Built against the wall is the "Syrian-type" basilica of the 5th–6th centuries, unusually oriented north–south, with a hall lined by two rows of columns, a flagstone-paved inner courtyard and traces of the portico around it. Further inland, at the north-western corner, you can see the stepped foundations of a corner tower and the north gate, with the paving of the road to Tomis still marked by cart-wheel ruts.

The Callatis Archaeology Museum, in its present building since 1978, gathers finds from the city and its cemeteries: sculpture, inscriptions, pottery and coins. In the yard, an open-air lapidarium of some 1,600 m² displays sarcophagi, columns and architectural fragments.

### Good to know

The ruins do not form a single archaeological park: they are several fenced areas between the town's apartment blocks and hotels, linked to the museum by a few streets. From the basilica to the beach is only a few steps.

## Don't miss

- The circuit wall on the clifftop, with the two towers of large limestone blocks that can still be seen.
- The 5th–6th-century Syrian-type basilica, with its flagstone-paved courtyard, built against the north wall.
- The paving of the road to Tomis at the north gate, with ruts left by cart wheels.
- The lapidarium in the museum yard, with sarcophagi, columns and capitals from the city and its cemeteries.
