## About Câlnic Fortress

Unlike the other villages in the UNESCO site of fortified churches in Transylvania, Câlnic did not grow around a church but around a noble castle. Around 1270, Count Chyl of Kelling (his family gave the village its German name, Kelling) built a residential tower here, guarded by a wall and a water-filled moat crossed by a drawbridge. It is one of the last surviving residences of a Saxon count in Transylvania.

In 1430 the last count moved away and sold the castle to the villagers. The Saxons turned it into a refuge for times of siege: they added a second wall and a tower on the south side, storerooms for provisions and, towards the end of the 15th century, a small hall church with an apse. Around the middle of the 16th century the moat was filled in and the bridge was replaced by a gate tower with a portcullis. In 1658 raiders laid waste to the village but failed to take the fortress. Restored in 1961–1964, it joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999, and since 1995 it has been looked after by the Ars Transsilvaniae Association of Cluj.

### What you can see

You enter beneath the gate tower, with its timber gallery, into the inner courtyard, enclosed by the oval wall. The most striking building is the "Siegfried" keep, the count's square tower, over 20 m high, with small windows; inside there is a small museum of folk and medieval art. Next to it stands the chapel, with a timber gallery painted with floral motifs in 1733, used today for conferences and symposia. In the courtyard you can also see the well and the remains of the storerooms built against the wall.

### Good to know

The village's Lutheran church, which locals call the "Hill Church", is a separate building on the hill above the fortress; it was restored between 2018 and 2023 and belongs to the Lutheran parish.
