## About Piatra Roșie Dacian Fortress

The Piatra Roșie fortress sits on the plateau of an 832 m limestone hill in the Orăștie Mountains, above the villages of Luncani and Alun in the commune of Boșorod. The hill is surrounded on three sides by steep slopes and rock faces, and reddish streaks can still be seen on the rock. In the 1st century BC the Dacians built a fortification here that guarded the western approaches to Sarmizegetusa Regia; it remained in use until the wars with Rome of AD 101–106, when it was destroyed.

The fortress has two enclosures, built at different times, covering about 1.2 ha in all. The first is a rectangle of roughly 102 × 45 m, with walls of dressed stone blocks tied together with timber beams (murus dacicus) and five towers: four at the corners and one on the east side. The second enclosure, with a stone-and-earth wall reinforced by a palisade, later took in the eastern part of the plateau. The 1949 excavations uncovered, among other things, an iron parade shield with an aurochs in a medallion, a three-armed bronze candelabrum and a bronze bust thought to depict the goddess Bendis.

Since 1999 Luncani-Piatra Roșie has been one of the six components of the "Dacian Fortresses of the Orăștie Mountains", inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with Sarmizegetusa Regia, Costești-Cetățuie, Costești-Blidaru, Bănița and Căpâlna. Since 2020 the fortress has been managed by Hunedoara County Council.

### What you can see

The last stretch of the climb follows the Dacians' old access road: a ramp of steps made of large moss-covered stone slabs, rising through the beech forest to the north-east corner tower, where the entrance to the fortress was. Up on the plateau you can make out the line of the walls, the tower pits with the lowest courses of dressed blocks, and traces of a large apsidal building and a cistern. The site has not been restored: many walls lie buried under earth and vegetation and there is little signage, so the appeal of the place lies mainly in the quiet, the forest and the view over the wooded ridges of the Șureanu Mountains.

### Good to know

There is no visitor centre, ticket office or guide on site. The dirt road from Luncani towards the fortress is often damaged after rain, and the last part is climbed on foot along a steep path; in summer, signs at the Dacian fortresses warn of vipers.

## Don't miss

- The ramp of large stone-slab steps of the old access road, climbing through the forest to the entrance tower.
- The pits of the corner towers, with the lowest courses of dressed blocks from the Dacian wall.
- The view from the edge of the plateau over the wooded ridges of the Șureanu Mountains.
- The hill's limestone faces with reddish streaks, seen from the road in the valley.
- The red-triangle waymarked trail Grădiștea de Munte – Piatra Roșie – Cioclovina, for a day hike through the Grădiștea Muncelului–Cioclovina Nature Park.

## Good to know before you go

### Getting there

**By car:** from Călan (on the DN66, ~25 km from Deva) follow county road DJ668A through Boșorod and up the Luncani valley to Luncani (~20 km). In Luncani take the local road towards Alun, then continue ~2 km up the valley below Piatra Roșie on a dirt road that turns muddy after rain; leave the car where the road stops being passable. From there a sign points to the path: a few hundred metres of steep climbing through the forest, about 20–30 minutes, the last part being the paved Dacian road itself. The fortress can also be reached on the red-triangle waymarked trail from Grădiștea de Munte (6–7 hours to Cioclovina) or on the red-stripe trail Costești – Blidaru – Tîrsa – Alun.

**Public transport:** the nearest railway station is Călan, on the Simeria–Petroșani line; we found no regular service to Luncani, so you continue by car or taxi.

### Where to park

There is no proper car park. You leave the car at the end of the dirt road in the valley and climb on foot from there. After rain the road can be hard going for an ordinary car, so you may have to park further down.

### Fees & discounts

We found no prices published by the site's manager, and there is no ticket office at the fortress.

### Rules

A historic monument and UNESCO site: do not climb on the walls or move the stones, and metal detecting is prohibited. Keep to the path. Wear hiking or sports shoes: the path is steep, covered in leaves and roots, and slippery after rain. In summer watch your step: there are vipers in the area.
