## About Dinogetia Fortress

Dinogetia Fortress stands on the "Bisericuța" hillock, a rocky rise in the Danube floodplain ~5 km north-west of Garvăn village, close to where the Siret flows into the Danube and across the river from Galați. Getae lived here before the Romans arrived, and in the 2nd century a Roman garrison was stationed on the site: stamped bricks and inscriptions name detachments of the V Macedonica and I Italica legions, auxiliary cohorts and the Classis Flavia Moesica fleet. The name already appears in the work of the geographer Ptolemy.

The fortress visible today was built in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries, under Diocletian: a trapezoidal enclosure of ~1.2 ha, with a wall ~2.5 m thick and 14 horseshoe- and fan-shaped towers. It was rebuilt under the emperors Anastasius and Justinian, burned during the Kutrigur invasion of 559 and was abandoned around the turn of the 6th and 7th centuries. After 971, when Byzantium returned to the Danube, a settlement of sunken huts grew up inside the walls, with a small church at its centre, and was lived in until the second half of the 12th century. Excavations began in 1939 under Gheorghe Ștefan and continued, with breaks, into the 2010s.

Dinogetia is part of the "Frontiers of the Roman Empire – The Danube Limes (Romania)" nomination, on UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List since 2020.

### What you can see

The site is an archaeological ruin, not a rebuilt fortress. The best-preserved part is the **curtain wall** with its rounded towers, set along the edge of the hillock; one tower and a few stretches of wall have been consolidated. You can make out the **main gate** on the east side and the secondary gates to the north and west. Inside are the foundations of the 5th–6th-century **basilica** next to the east gate, of a large house (domus) and of the headquarters building, some of them under protective metal roofs. The Roman baths lie outside the walls, ~100 m away. From the hillock you look out over the flat Danube floodplain, with Galați on the horizon.

### Good to know

The site is poorly maintained: press reports and photos taken on the ground have shown the ruins overgrown with vegetation and the protective roofs damaged. No visiting hours, admission fee or visitor centre are published, and the last kilometre to the fortress is a dirt road.

## Don't miss

- The curtain wall from Diocletian's time, ~2.5 m thick, with its horseshoe- and fan-shaped towers.
- The main gate on the east side, the entrance to the late Roman fortress.
- The foundations of the 5th–6th-century basilica, rebuilt under Anastasius and Justinian.
- The view from the hillock across the Danube floodplain as far as Galați.
