## About Heldenburg Fortress

Heldenburg Fortress, also known locally as the Fortress of the Heroes (Cetatea Eroilor), stands on a rock in the Perșani Mountains, west of the village of Crizbav (German Krebsbach, Hungarian Krizba), in Crizbav commune. From the top you can see the whole Burzenland (Țara Bârsei), and the spot served as a lookout long before the Middle Ages: archaeological research has found traces of habitation here from the Iron Age to Roman times.

Little is known about the medieval fortification. It is first mentioned in writing in 1335, and the surviving walls are attributed to the 13th century. Some researchers link it to the Teutonic Knights, who had their centre at Feldioara, but the connection remains hypothetical. Local tradition ascribes it to King Ladislaus I of Hungary, in 1080. The fortress is a listed historic monument (LMI code BV-II-m-A-11662).

### What you can see

What survives of the fortress is the square keep, with sides of about 8 m and walls over 2 m thick, divided into three levels; sockets for beams can also be seen in the masonry. A corner of masonry recalls the enclosure that started from the tower. To the west the plateau is cut off by a natural cleft, which was crossed by a movable bridge, and about 20 m from the tower there are traces of a cistern cut into the rock. On the north and east sides the rock drops into precipices, and the view stretches across the Burzenland.

### Good to know

The ruin is in the forest and is not set up for visitors. You reach it by a forest road and then on foot, and the state of the road depends on the weather. Marked hikes from the village of Rotbav also lead to the fortress.

## Don't miss

- The square keep, with stone masonry preserved on three levels, seen from below among the pines.
- The natural cleft that cut off the plateau to the west and was crossed by a movable bridge.
- The traces of the cistern cut into the rock, a few dozen metres from the tower.

## Good to know before you go

### Getting there

**By car:** from Brașov, take the DN13 (E60) towards Sighișoara and turn off at Feldioara towards Crizbav, about 30 km from Brașov. A forest road leads from the village up into the mountains; in an account from 2018 it was passable by car as far as a wide bend where you park, from which it is a short walk down to the fortress. The state of the road changes with the weather, and there are no clear signs on the last stretch.

**Public transport:** from Brașov you can take a bus to Crizbav, from where you continue on foot uphill. You can also walk up from the village of Rotbav on a marked trail of about 12 km there and back, which takes around 4 hours.

### Where to park

There is no marked car park; cars are left on the forest road, at a wide bend, without blocking the way.

### Rules

Do not go near the edge of the rock and do not climb on the walls of the tower, which are old and decayed. The fortress is a listed monument, so do not scratch the walls or take anything away. Keep the site clean, and do not light fires in the forest.
