## About Mikó Castle

Mikó Castle, known to locals simply as “the fortress”, is the oldest important historic monument in Miercurea Ciuc. Building began in April 1623 on the orders of Hídvégi Mikó Ferenc, supreme captain of the Szekler seats of Ciuc, Gheorgheni and Casin and a trusted man of Prince Gabriel Bethlen. The building has a square plan of about 75 × 70 m and the look of a Renaissance castle with Italian influences; by all signs, work stopped when its founder died in 1635.

On 21 October 1661 Turkish-Tatar troops occupied and burned the castle. Rebuilding began only in 1714, under the Austrian authorities, who turned it into a fortification: an outer ring with four Italian-style bastions was laid out around it, traces of which can still be seen on the south side. From 1764 to 1849 it housed the staff of the first Szekler border infantry regiment, and during the 1848–1849 Revolution it was Gál Sándor’s headquarters. The army used it, with short breaks, until around the middle of the 20th century.

Since 1970, after a major repair, the castle has housed the Szekler Museum of Ciuc, founded in 1930. The building’s last general restoration took place in 2010–2013.

### What you can see

The thick walls, the corner towers and the inner courtyard can be seen from outside, and the outer gate, with its clock, is a small monument in its own right. Inside, the permanent exhibitions fill the rooms on the ground and upper floors. “Útkereszteződésben” (“At the Crossroads”) follows the history of Miercurea Ciuc over seven rooms, from the early Middle Ages to 1989; “Csíki idők járása” is an ethnography exhibition with a mountain sheepfold, carpentry and wheelwright workshops, a cart shed and the interior of a peasant house. There are also exhibitions on restored manuscripts, books and religious objects (13th–19th centuries), on the printing house and bookbinding workshop of the Franciscans of Șumuleu (Csíksomlyó), and on the history of the castle.
