## About Rupea Fortress

Rupea Fortress sits on Cohalm Hill, a mound of basalt left by the area's volcanic past, rising above the town on the road between Brașov and Sighișoara. Excavations have found traces of prehistoric settlement, and tradition links the hill to the Dacian stronghold of Ramidava and to a Roman fortified post; the town's name comes from the Latin *rupes*, "rock". The fortress is first recorded in 1324, when Saxons in revolt against King Charles I of Hungary took shelter in *castrum Kuholm*.

It was never a nobleman's seat but a refuge fortress: in times of danger the people of Rupea and the surrounding villages withdrew behind its walls, with their provisions and water from the fortress's own well. As the community grew, between the 14th and 17th centuries the walls spread down the hill in several enclosures, one below the other, giving the fortress its spiral shape climbing towards the summit.

After a fire in 1643 and a storm that tore off its roofs in 1790, the fortress was abandoned and fell into ruin, and under communism there was even talk of quarrying the basalt of the hill. It was saved by a restoration in 2010–2013, funded by the European Union, after which it reopened to visitors.

### What you can see

You enter through the gate tower of the lower fortress, a wide courtyard ringed by crenellated walls and red-roofed towers, where the old watchman's house also stands. From there, paths and steps lead up through the middle fortress, with the pentagonal gate tower, the chapel and the courtyard with the well, to the upper fortress, the oldest part, built straight onto the basalt rock.

The restored towers and rooms are mostly empty, so the visit is really about walls, gates and stone archways. The reward is at the top: from the walls you look out over the rooftops of Rupea and the Transylvanian hills stretching far into the distance, and in the evening the fortress is floodlit.

## Don't miss

- The courtyard of the lower fortress, with its gate tower and red-roofed towers, seen from above.
