## About Târgu Mureș Citadel

The citadel of Târgu Mureș is one of the largest fortified enclosures in Transylvania: some 4.3 hectares ringed by walls of brick and river stone, with seven bastions linked to one another. The first fortification was raised by Voivode Stephen Báthory in 1492, around the church and friary of the Franciscans who were already here. It was destroyed in 1601, in the troubled years of the campaigns of Giorgio Basta and Michael the Brave, and the townspeople began straight afterwards, in 1602, a new and much larger citadel, finished around the middle of the 17th century.

Each bastion was built and defended by a guild, and the names have stuck: the Tailors', the Butchers', the Coopers', the Tanners', the Furriers' and Locksmiths', plus the Gate Bastion and the Báthory Bastion. The Hungarian poet Bálint Balassi was held prisoner in the old fortress in 1575. After centuries of military use, the buildings became museums and cultural venues in the 1960s, and the enclosure was restored with European funds after 2011, giving it today's walls, paths and gardens.

### What you can see

You enter beneath the tower of the Gate Bastion, with its Renaissance doorframe dated 1613, into a wide courtyard of lawns and paths where the town comes to stroll. In the south-west corner stands the Reformed Church in the Citadel, the former Franciscan church, Gothic, completed in the 15th century, with its 55-metre tower. In the south-east is the former command building, home to the History and Archaeology Section of the Mureș County Museum and its exhibition on the 17th-century town. The courtyard also has a modern geodesic dome, built after the archaeological digs.

The bastions and the other buildings of the enclosure house galleries, a theatre, the civil wedding hall and temporary exhibitions. Outside, the path along the former moat makes a circuit of the walls, past bastions with tall tiled roofs.

### Good to know

The enclosure is a public space and there is no ticket to enter; you pay only for the museum and some events. In summer the courtyard and the bastions host concerts and festivals.
