## About Cetățuia Fortress (Cluj-Napoca)

The Cetățuia (Fellegvár in Hungarian) was built in the early decades of the 18th century, after Transylvania came under Habsburg rule. The plans were drawn up by the military architect Giovanni Morando Visconti: a fortress with star-shaped walls, bastions at the gates and an earth rampart around it, meant above all to keep the city at its feet under control. It also served as a prison, especially during the 1848 revolution; the Saxon pastor Stephan Ludwig Roth, held here, was executed on the hill on 11 May 1849.

Only part of the original fortress survives: fragments of walls and ramparts, a few gate and storage buildings, among them a former gunpowder magazine. Much of the hill has been shaped by landslides, and in the 1970s the Belvedere Hotel appeared at the top. In 1995 a 26 m metal cross was raised at the edge facing the city, replacing an older one destroyed by the communist authorities.

For the people of Cluj, the Cetățuia is above all a place for a stroll and for looking down on the city. It is not a monument with a ticket office, but a public hill with paths, steps and terraces from which the historic centre can be seen.

### What you can see

From the terrace and the steps at the edge of the plateau the whole of central Cluj is laid out below, with the tower of St Michael's Church in the foreground and the surrounding hills in the distance. On the plateau stand the big cross and the hotel, and between them the remains of the fortress: gate buildings with tall tiled roofs, the old gunpowder magazine and stretches of wall and earth rampart. The interiors of the buildings are not run as a museum.

### Good to know

The project to redevelop the whole hill (about 14 hectares, the result of the 2019 design competition) has been in preparation for years, and public sources do not show a general building site open: so far only the steps on the main path have been built from the plan. The condition of the paths and steps can vary, so good footwear is worth bringing.

## Don't miss

- The view over Cluj's historic centre, with the tower of St Michael's Church, from the terrace at the edge of the plateau.
- The 26 m metal cross, raised in 1995, visible from many points in the city.
- The old gunpowder magazine and the gate buildings with tall tiled roofs, left over from the Austrian fortress.
- The steps climbing from the centre, through the woods on the slope.

## Good to know before you go

### Getting there

**On foot:** The Cetățuia is less than a kilometre from the centre of Cluj. The best-known climb starts on Galileo Galilei Street and continues up steps through the woods to the plateau (~15–20 minutes, uphill).

**By car:** The plateau can be reached by car, but spaces are few, and walking up from the centre is usually simpler. Public transport: from the centre, the city's public transport reaches the foot of the hill, and the rest is on foot.

### Where to park

There are parking spaces on the plateau and around the hill, but their number is limited and they fill quickly at weekends and in the evening, at sunset. If you are in the centre, it is more convenient to walk up.

### Rules

A public place: keep to lawn areas and signs, and take litter to the bins in the area. Steps and slopes can be slippery when wet or icy. Photography is free; for drones the general rules for the city's airspace apply.

### Facilities

Benches and viewing terraces · restaurant and hotel on the plateau · no ticket or visiting office
