## About Cioclovina Cave

The Ponorici–Cioclovina karst complex lies in the Șureanu Mountains, south of the village of Cioclovina in Boșorod commune, and is a nature reserve within the Grădiștea Muncelului–Cioclovina Natural Park. The Ponorici stream sinks underground in the Ponorici meadows and comes back to daylight at Cioclovina, after a few kilometres through the mountain. The complex has two very different caves: Wet Cioclovina (Cioclovina cu Apă), crossed by the stream, and Dry Cioclovina (Cioclovina Uscată), a fossil cave.

Dry Cioclovina held a deposit of bat-guano phosphates estimated at over 50,000 m³, mined as fertiliser from 1912; about 30,000 m³ were removed in the first half of the 20th century. It was also here that ardealite, a mineral new to science, was described in 1931. In 1941 the miners found a human skull cap, along with stone tools and cave bear bones: the “Cioclovina 1” skull, described in 1942 by Francisc Rainer and Ion Th. Simionescu, is about 33,000 years old and among the oldest modern human remains in Romania.

### What can be seen

Ponorici and Wet Cioclovina form an underground traverse of 6,713 m with a vertical range of 167 m: shafts of 23, 14 and 12 m, steps, overhangs and sumps, with a fixed metal ladder at the exit towards the Great Hall. Besides its natural entrance, Dry Cioclovina has an artificial one, opened for phosphate mining. Without a permit, a visit stays outside: the wooded valley, the entrances in the limestone and the waterfall next to them.

### Good to know

The caves are not equipped and cannot be visited as a tourist; in the whole park, only Bolii Cave can be walked through without caving gear. Dry Cioclovina is a scientific reserve, in the park's strict protection zone, except for the section between the artificial and the natural entrance. Exploring it requires the approval of the park administration and a permit from the Speleological Heritage Commission, and from 1 December to 31 March, during bat hibernation, access is forbidden. In Wet Cioclovina the risk of flash floods is very high, especially in the rainy months of May and June.

## Don't miss

- The Ponorici stream emerging at Wet Cioclovina after its underground journey through the mountain.
- The artificial entrance of Dry Cioclovina, opened for 20th-century phosphate mining.
- The find spot of the “Cioclovina 1” skull, about 33,000 years old, among the oldest modern human remains in Romania.
- The Cioclovina Waterfall, in the valley about 200 m from the entrance.
- The red-triangle trail to the Piatra Roșie Dacian Fortress and Grădiștea de Munte, the village below Sarmizegetusa Regia.
