## About Colț Fortress

Colț Fortress stands on a wooded spur of rock more than 100 m above the Râușor valley, at the mouth of the gorge leading to the Retezat Mountains. It was built in the 14th–15th centuries by the Cândea knezes, a Romanian family from the Hațeg Country who were ennobled in the 15th century and gradually Magyarised under the name Kendeffy. Its core is a square tower house, later surrounded by an enclosure wall with towers that follows the shape of the rock.

The fortress was too small to hold out against an army and served rather as the family's residence and refuge. The Ottoman traveller Evliya Çelebi, who saw it in the 1660s, described a fortress with five corners and eleven towers, a single gate facing the Hațeg plain and slopes so steep that it could not be approached. It has been a ruin for more than two centuries, and the walls have never been restored.

Local tradition and several authors link it with Jules Verne's novel "The Carpathian Castle" (1892), seeing it as the model for the castle in the book; the connection remains a hypothesis. The fortress lies within the [Hațeg Country UNESCO Global Geopark](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/geoparcul-tara-hategului).

### What you can see

The walls of the square tower house still rise over several levels, and around it are the remains of the enclosure wall and towers, with a vaulted opening made of stone slabs. From the rock the view opens over the Râușor valley, the ridges of the Retezat and the villages below.

The "Poteca de poveste" (Story Trail), a themed trail of about 1 km opened in 2025, leads up to the fortress, with panels in Romanian and English: a comic strip based on Jules Verne's novel, illustrated by Șerban Andreescu, and panels on the nature and history of the site. At the end of the trail, QR codes lead to two local legends in audio format.

Below the fortress, on the other side of the valley, stands Colț Monastery, whose medieval church was also founded by the Cândea family.

### Good to know

The walls are unconsolidated ruins, the edges of the rock are steep, and vipers live among the stones.
