## About Mikes–Szentkereszty Manor in Zagon

The Mikes–Szentkereszty Manor in Zagon (Zágon) is one of the oldest noble residences in the eastern Székely Land. A beam bears the year 1632, and an inscription from the early 20th century names it as the probable birthplace of the writer Kelemen Mikes, who was born in the village. After the defeat of the Kuruc movement the family's estates were confiscated and passed to the Szentkereszty family, which explains the manor's double name.

Its present form comes from the 1903 reconstruction commissioned by Baron Zsigmond Szentkereszty: it kept the tall double-pitched shingle roof typical of the 18th century, but replaced the small porch with a broad columned veranda, added simple plaster frames around the windows and created a wide central hall. The building is now owned by the commune of Zagon.

Since 1997 it has housed the local Mikes Kelemen museum, run through the commune's cultural centre. The former granary in the courtyard has been turned into a guesthouse.

### What you can see

The exhibition fills four memorial rooms, dedicated to the writer Kelemen Mikes, secretary and fellow exile of Prince Francis II Rákóczi, to the teacher Vilmos Csutak, to the actress Manyi Kiss and to the writer and politician Géza Domokos, all connected with Zagon. In the actress's room, among stage photographs and posters, stands an old grand piano.

In the park around the manor are busts and carved wooden monuments of Kelemen Mikes, Francis II Rákóczi, Vilmos Csutak and Géza Domokos. The columned veranda, the shingle roof and the lawns around are the best photo subject.

### Good to know

Opening hours are not published on a website of the manor's own: the museum catalogue (CIMEC) gives 8:00–16:00 without naming the days, and the county tourist guide recommends confirming before you go. The site is also part of the "Land of Manors" programme in Covasna County.
