## About Pünkösti Manor House

In the middle of the village of Ozun, a few kilometres from Sfântu Gheorghe, a tall double mansard roof makes the Pünkösti manor house one of the easiest to recognise in the area. The commune has dozens of manor houses, and this one is regarded as one of the most remarkable architecturally: a popular Transylvanian variant of the late-Baroque mansard, with thick walls and splayed window niches.

The date of construction is still debated. The list of historic monuments and local press place it around 1810, but restoration work in recent years brought to light carved beams recording a renovation in 1729 by György Pünkösti and his wife, Klára Baló, which shows that an older house stood here. The family name, with documented roots going back to 1614, remains tied to the place. The best known of its descendants, Gergely Pünkösti (1820–1912), a major in the 1848–1849 revolution, announced the end of serf obligations in the Three Seats on 30 May 1848 at the assembly in Cernatu de Jos. A memorial plaque on the wall of the manor house keeps his name.

The building is now publicly owned, and according to local press its restoration was completed in 2025.

### What you can see

The main attraction is the exterior: the façade with splayed window niches, the double roof — a remarkable piece of carpentry for its time — and the plaque dedicated to Gergely Pünkösti. The carved wooden beams, about 7 metres long, found during the restoration and taken from the ceiling of a banqueting hall, are displayed inside the manor house, according to a source from the România Atractivă programme. Nearby stand other manor houses and castles of Ozun, among them the Béldy-Mikes castle and the Temesváry manor house, which turns the village centre into a small trail of Three Seats manor houses.

### Good to know

The manor house is not a museum with officially announced visiting hours. Sources differ on its present use: some call it the commune's library, others a community centre or a base for local associations. To go inside, the surest way is to phone the town hall of Ozun.
