# Tourist attractions in Maramureș County

[Romania](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/attractions) › [Maramureș](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/region/maramures)

Maramureș County takes in the Maramureș country, with the valleys of the Iza, the Mara and the Vișeu, and, beyond the Gutâi, the Chioar and Lăpuș countries towards Baia Mare. The Rodna Mountains, with Pietrosul, reach the greatest height in the Eastern Carpathians, while the Maramureș Mountains, on the border, remain little walked. Baia Mare, the county seat, is an old mining town with a restored historic centre; Sighetu Marmației, Borșa, Vișeu de Sus and Târgu Lăpuș are the other towns. Anyone looking for places to visit in Maramureș County comes for wooden churches, villages and mountains.

The wooden churches listed by UNESCO, from [Bârsana](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/biserica-de-lemn-barsana), [Desești](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/biserica-de-lemn-desesti) and Budești to [Rogoz](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/biserica-de-lemn-rogoz), in Lăpuș, can be seen on a two-day circuit. The [Merry Cemetery](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/cimitirul-vesel) in Săpânța and the Memorial in Sighet are an hour's drive to the north. Towards Borșa, the [Horses' Waterfall](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/cascada-cailor) is reached by chairlift and then on foot, while on the road from Baia Mare the Gutâi Pass and Lake Mogoșa make fitting stops. At Ocna Șugatag, the salt lakes draw the locals in summer.
