# Tourist attractions in Satu Mare County

Satu Mare County is the north-western corner of Romania, on the border with Hungary and Ukraine: the plain of the Someș and the Ier, with lowland villages and thermal waters, and in the east the Oaș country, a basin enclosed by hills, with its costume and customs still kept. Satu Mare, the county seat, on the Someș, has a centre of early twentieth-century buildings, the Firemen's Tower and cathedrals of several denominations; Carei, Negrești-Oaș and Tășnad are the smaller towns. The places to visit in Satu Mare County are few, but easy to combine in a day.

[Károlyi Castle](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/castelul-karolyi-carei) in Carei, the residence of the noble family that ruled the area for centuries, is now a museum and stands in a dendrological park in the town centre. In the Oaș country, the Oaș Country Museum in Negrești-Oaș, with its open-air section, is worth seeing, while at Tășnad and Satu Mare the thermal waters are a reason to stop.
