## About Vaslui Princely Court (Curtea Domnească din Vaslui)

The Princely Courts of Vaslui were one of the residences of the rulers of Moldavia, built in the 15th century at the edge of a town that administered the district of the Lower Land. Scholars credit the court to Stephen II, son of Alexander the Good, in 1435–1436; another view attributes it to Alexander the Good himself. Many documents survive that were issued "from Vaslui" in the time of Stephen the Great, and after his victory at Podul Înalt (1475) the prince built the court church here in 1490, in less than five months.

The court fell into ruin in the 17th century: in 1635 Vasile Lupu forbade the taking of stone from the ruins, and in 1646 Marco Bandini noted that the princely palace lay in ruins. The church held out longer, but collapsed in 1818 and was rebuilt in 1820 by Maria Cantacuzino, wife of the Grand Logothete Costache Ghica; its present appearance comes from the restoration of 1914–1928. Systematic excavations on the site of the court took place in 1958–1959, 1976–1982 and 1998–2002, and between 2011 and 2015 the parish, with EU funds and the support of the town hall, laid out an archaeological park.

### What you can see

In the park, the traces of the court walls are shown among lawns, paved paths and benches; stretches of the enclosure walls, a princely cellar and a stone house in the style of Stephen's day have been rebuilt, and a new bell tower dominates the space. Some of what was found here, including green-glazed stove tiles, is held by the Ștefan cel Mare County Museum.

The church, in the Moldavian style of Stephen the Great's time, has a trefoil plan, side apses and a semicircular altar apse. Its stone-and-brick façades carry rows of blind arcades and discs of glazed ceramic, and the interior painting of 1894 is signed by George Ioanid.

### Good to know

This is a single ensemble: the archaeological park and the church are visited together, and the church is an active place of worship run by the parish. We found no published opening hours; the park has gates to the street, so it is worth going in the daytime and checking on the spot.
