## About Neajlov Delta

At Comana, halfway between Bucharest and Giurgiu, the Neajlov river loses its bed before reaching the Argeș and spreads out across a marshy plain of about 1,100 ha. Locals call it Balta Comana, visitors the Neajlov Delta: a maze of narrow channels, open pools and tall reeds, bordered by the oak and ash forests of Comana. It is considered the largest wetland in the south of the country and the second richest in wildlife after the Danube Delta.

The marsh is the heart of Comana Natural Park, a protected area since 2004 covering about 25,000 ha. The park is a Ramsar wetland of international importance and a Natura 2000 site. Across the park, 212 bird species, 30 fish species and over 1,100 plant species have been recorded. Balta Comana lies in the strictly protected zone, together with the butcher's broom reserve at Oloaga-Grădinari and the Romanian peony reserve at Padina Tătarului.

Comana also has history: the village monastery was founded by Vlad the Impaler, and the poet Gellu Naum spent his last years here. A leisure complex has grown up on the shore of the marsh, and the boat trips leave from there.

### What you can see

The easiest way in is the small boat with about 20 seats, which makes a short trip across the large pools in front of the Casa Comana complex. The narrow channels, where the boat cannot go, are reached by rowing boat or kayak, hired on the shore or on guided trips run by Bucharest kayak clubs. Among the reeds and bulrushes you see herons, egrets, cormorants and wild ducks, and with luck ospreys.

Around the marsh, Comana forest has marked trails, good for walking or cycling. In early May, in the Padina Tătarului reserve near the village of Vlad Țepeș, the Romanian woodland peony flowers, the park's emblem.

### Good to know

Entry to the park requires the administration's visitor fee of 5 lei per person per day. The small boat and the boat hire run only at weekends, and in summer the water can drop a lot, so motorboat trips get shorter. Fishing is banned in Balta Comana, as it is a strictly protected zone.
