## About Eforie Nord

Eforie Nord occupies the narrow strip of land between the Black Sea and Lake Techirghiol, fourteen kilometres south of Constanța. It is the second largest resort on the Romanian coast after Mamaia, and the only one where the beach and the mud cure sit side by side: it is a few hundred metres' walk from the sand to the shore of the salt lake.

The foundation stone of the resort was laid in 1894, when the Eforia Spitalelor Civile, the body running Bucharest's civil hospitals, bought a hundred hectares on the lakeshore from the state and built a spa sanatorium here. The resort takes its name from that institution. Until 1933 the place belonged administratively to Techirghiol, and the town of Eforie was formed in 1966 by joining the two resorts; the tower blocks along the cliff and the complexes on the beach date from the socialist building years.

Lake Techirghiol is the largest salt lake in Romania, almost 1,070 hectares, with a salt concentration of about 95 grams per litre. On its bed forms the sapropelic mud, produced by the decomposition of the brine shrimp Artemia salina and the alga Cladophora, used in treatment since 1899. The town of Eforie holds the status of a balneoclimatic resort, and Eforie Nord is listed as a tourist resort of national interest.

### What you can see

The beach runs for some three kilometres, from the Steaua de Mare complex in the north to Belona harbour in the south, and a string of stone groynes running out from the shore divides it into bays of calm water; in places it is a hundred metres wide. Above it, the cliff carries the boulevard, the tower hotels of the 1960s and the beach complexes, among them the yellow building of the Debarcader. At the southern end are Lake Belona, a seawater basin laid out in 1958–1959, and the Ana Yacht Club marina.

### Good to know

The spa treatment runs all year, but the beach works only in summer: lifeguards are on duty during the season, and the equipped sections are packed away in autumn. Băile Reci, where the mud is applied, is on the lakeshore, not on the beach.

## Don't miss

- Băile Reci on the shore of Lake Techirghiol, where the mud is spread cold on the skin, left to dry in the sun and washed off with a swim in the salt lake.
- The Debarcader complex, the yellow building of stacked terraces on the beach and the landmark of the resort; it is seen best from the water.
- The stone groynes running out from the shore, which close off bays of calm, shallow water.
- Lake Belona, the seawater basin laid out in 1958–1959 at the southern end of the resort, beside the Ana Yacht Club marina.
- The three tower blocks of the Steaua de Mare complex at the northern end of the beach: the Delfinul, Meduza and Steaua de Mare hotels.

## Good to know before you go

### Getting there

**By car:** Eforie Nord is 14 km south of Constanța on the DN39 (E87), and about 250 km from Bucharest — the A2 to Constanța, then the A4 bypass and the coast road. Bulevardul Republicii crosses the resort, and you go down to the beach on the side streets running off Bulevardul Tudor Vladimirescu.

**Public transport:** Eforie Nord station is on the Constanța–Mangalia line, with frequent trains from Constanța and direct services from Bucharest in summer; it is a few minutes' walk from the station to the beach. Minibuses to the southern resorts also run from the Constanța coach stations. The nearest airport is Mihail Kogălniceanu, about 40 km away.

### Where to park

The resort has no large car park by the beach: cars are left on the streets behind the cliff and in the car parks of the hotels and beach complexes. Eforie town hall does not publish a parking tariff for the resort, so it is worth asking where you stay whether they have a space of their own. On July and August weekends the places near the beach fill up early in the morning. Băile Reci has its own car park, under video surveillance.

### Fees & discounts

There is no admission ticket for the beach: access is free along its whole length, and sector operators may only charge for the furniture. In the summer of 2026 the Romanian press reported rates in Eforie Nord of about 25–30 lei a day for a sunbed and 80–100 lei for two sunbeds with an umbrella — among the lowest on the coast, peaking in July and August. At Băile Reci a single entry costs 40 lei, a five-entry pass 160 lei and a ten-entry pass 300 lei, and children go in free with a paying parent.

### Rules

The beach is public property, and under Emergency Ordinance 19/2006 sector operators must leave access and movement free. No cars or quad bikes on the sand, no camping and no street trading. Watch the flags at the lifeguard posts: red over yellow means a supervised area, an added yellow flag that swimming is not advised, red that entering the water is forbidden, and black and white chequered marks areas reserved for craft. Mud applications are taken in moderation, 30 to 60 minutes in the sun followed by a bathe in the lake; for chronic conditions, ask a spa doctor first.

### Facilities

Lifeguard posts and first aid points in season · sections with sunbeds and umbrellas, alongside stretches of free beach · bars, restaurants and terraces on the beach and along the cliff · Băile Reci for mud treatment, on the shore of Lake Techirghiol · Eforie Aqua Park and a marina · hotels with treatment centres open all year · the railway station a few minutes' walk away · difficult access with a pushchair or wheelchair on the sand and on the cliff steps
