## About Eforie Sud

Eforie Sud is the southern half of the town of Eforie and its administrative seat, set on a high cliff between the Black Sea and Lake Techirghiol. Spa tourism on the Romanian coast started here: in 1899 the Moldavian landowner Ioan Movilă laid the foundation stone of his hotel by the sea, and the place was first called Băile Techirghiol-Movilă.

Movilă had brought doctors and chemists from Vienna to analyse the water and the mud of the lake, then built two hotels and a sanatorium with fifty cabins for warm mud baths, opened in the summer of 1902. After his death in 1904 the family carried on selling building plots: some fifty villas and hotels went up between 1903 and 1906, and by 1938 the resort had around five hundred buildings and took 20,000 visitors a season.

The name kept changing. Between the wars it was Carmen Sylva, after the pen name of Queen Elisabeth; under communism it was Vasile Roaită; and since 1962 it has been Eforie Sud. From 1966 it has formed, together with Eforie Nord, the town of Eforie.

### What you can see

The landmark of the resort is the cliff, with the promenade along its top and the flights of steps going down to the beach. Along it stand interwar villas and the Casino, built in the 1930s to the design of the architect Arta Cerkez: a horizontal block with shopping galleries and two matching towers ending in belvederes, one of the coast's representative Art Deco buildings — today derelict and up for sale. In the centre are the park and the statue of Ion Movilă, and to the south the cliff rises at Capul Turcului, above quieter stretches of sand.

The beach, long the narrowest on the coast, has been rebuilt from scratch: between 2021 and 2023 the Dobrogea-Litoral Water Basin Administration put up seven groynes and renourished 5.7 km of shore, from Belona harbour to the boundary with Tuzla, with three million cubic metres of sand. The dry strip is now between 100 and 140 metres wide.

### Good to know

Some 200 metres offshore, under three metres of water, lies the wreck of a nineteenth-century wooden ship; two pieces of mast still show above the sand that has covered the rest.

## Don't miss

- The cliff-top promenade, the best place in the resort to look down on the beach and the groynes, and the steps that lead from it onto the sand.
- The 1930s Casino, with shopping galleries at street level and two towers ending in belvederes: Art Deco architecture, now derelict.
- The park in the centre and the bronze statue of Ion Movilă, the landowner who founded the resort in 1899.
- The interwar villas scattered along the streets between the cliff and the main road, survivors of the almost five hundred buildings put up by 1938.
- Capul Turcului, the southern end of the cliff, with the quieter beaches below it.

## Good to know before you go

### Getting there

**By car:** Eforie Sud is about 17 km south of Constanța on the DN39 (E87), which crosses the resort as Bulevardul Republicii; from Bucharest take the A2 to Constanța, then the A4 bypass and the coast road, nearly 260 km in all. You go down to the beach on the side streets that end at the cliff.

**Public transport:** Eforie Sud station, opened with the line in 1927, is on the Constanța–Mangalia railway, with frequent trains from Constanța and direct services from Bucharest in summer. Minibuses to all the southern resorts run from the Constanța coach stations. The nearest airport is Mihail Kogălniceanu, about 45 km away.

### Where to park

The resort has no large car park by the beach: cars are left on the streets behind the cliff and in the car parks of the hotels, villas and terraces. Eforie town hall does not publish a parking tariff for the resort, so it is worth asking where you stay whether they have a space of their own. On July and August weekends the places near the cliff fill up early in the morning.

### Fees & discounts

There is no admission ticket for the beach: access is free along its whole length, and sector operators may only charge for the furniture. In the summer of 2026 the Romanian press reported rates in Eforie Sud of about 25–30 lei a day for a sunbed — among the lowest on the coast, peaking in July and August.

### Rules

The beach is public property, and under Emergency Ordinance 19/2006 sector operators must leave access and movement free. No cars or quad bikes on the sand, no camping and no street trading. Watch the flags at the lifeguard posts: red over yellow means a supervised area, an added yellow flag that swimming is not advised, red that entering the water is forbidden, and black and white chequered marks areas reserved for craft. The cliff is an eroding earth bank: go down by the steps and the made paths, not over the slope.

### Facilities

Lifeguard posts and first aid points in season · sections with sunbeds and umbrellas, alongside stretches of free beach · bars, restaurants and terraces on the beach and along the cliff · shops, a park and a summer theatre in the centre of the resort · the railway station a few minutes' walk away · a tourist information centre on Strada Republicii · Băile Reci for the mud cure, about 4 km away in Eforie Nord · difficult access with a pushchair or wheelchair on the cliff steps and on the sand
