## About Fabric Synagogue

The Fabric Synagogue, also called the New Synagogue, stands on Strada Ion Luca Caragiale, at no. 2, in Timișoara's Fabric district. It was designed by the architect Lipót Baumhorn, built by Josef Kremer between 1897 and 1899 and inaugurated on 3 September 1899. It is called "new" because it replaced an older synagogue in the district.

Services stopped in 1985, when most of the community had left. For almost four decades the building stood unused, fell into disrepair and was vandalised several times. In 2022 it joined the World Monuments Watch programme, and since October 2023 it has been administered by the municipality of Timișoara for 49 years; the Jewish community remains the owner.

### What you can see

The building has a square plan and a central dome on an octagonal drum, visible from the surrounding streets too. The style is eclectic, with Moorish, Gothic and Renaissance elements. The façade is polychrome: exposed red brick alternating with rendered masonry, an arcade frieze, stone ornaments, a large rose window under the central arch and a Hebrew inscription above it. Two small towers with domes frame the main façade.

### Good to know

The building is not open to visitors; it can be seen from the street. The safety works have stabilised the structure and protected the stained-glass windows, and the project to give it a new use as a cultural and community space, which also covers the neighbouring prayer house and the courtyard, is being prepared.
