## About Geoagiu-Băi

Geoagiu-Băi (Feredőgyógy in Hungarian) is a spa and climatic resort in Hunedoara county, at about 350 m above sea level, in the depression at the foot of the Metaliferi Mountains, among wooded hills. It belongs to the town of Geoagiu, ~6 km away, and has been classed since 2008 as a tourist resort of national interest. The waters are thermal and mesothermal, bicarbonate, calcium, magnesium and slightly carbonated, with natural temperatures of around 29–33 °C, used in cures for conditions of the locomotor system, for some chronic gynaecological conditions and in recovery after injuries.

The springs have been in use for two thousand years: the Dacians called them Germisara, the Romans built up the pool in the centre of the resort, and in the middle of the 16th century Queen Isabella had the baths restored. The German pastor Conrad Hiltebrandt described them in his diary of 1656–1658. Systematic use of the waters began in the early 20th century, when the first hotels, villas, pools and mud baths appeared.

### What you can see

In the centre of the resort is the **Băile Daco Romane** lido, with four thermal pools: one 1.6–3.5 m deep, with a 10 m diving board, one 0.6–1.9 m deep for swimming and relaxing, the Olympic pool and a children's pool 50 cm deep with a slide. The sunbeds are free, and the complex has a restaurant, cafés and self-service areas.

Next to the lido are the **Roman baths of Germisara**, the ancient pool in the travertine mound, and on the south-eastern edge of the resort is **Clocota waterfall**; both have pages of their own. Between the resort and the town of Geoagiu, stretches of the Roman road paved with stone slabs survive. North of the resort, the 8 ha of forest that protects the thermal springs is a nature reserve. Spa treatments (thermal baths, kinetotherapy, electrotherapy) are given in the treatment centres of the resort's hotels.

### Good to know

The lido operates in summer; the rest of the resort can be visited all year, without a ticket.
