## About Glogoveanu Kula

Glogoveanu Kula, also known as the Glogoveanu House, stands in the centre of the village of Glogova, in Glogova commune, on the road between Motru and Baia de Aramă. It is part of the Glogoveanu Ensemble, together with St Nicholas church and the enclosure wall, in a park beside the road. The place belonged to the Glogoveanu boyar family, and Tudor Vladimirescu also worked in the area as an estate administrator.

According to tradition, Matei Glogoveanu built a house with a ground floor and the church (begun in 1730) in the 18th century. His son Ioniță, caimacam of Craiova, finished the church in 1764 and afterwards built the present dwelling, keeping only the cellar of the old house. The veranda was added later, and towards the end of the 19th century the building was restored by its then owner, Gheorghe Vernescu. After 1951 it housed a collective farm and classes of the village school; after the restoration of the 1960s it was a local museum and then a guest house.

### What you can see

The ground floor is largely a massive cellar, with walls almost a metre and a half thick and two vaulted rooms. The upper floor has a veranda with wooden columns, rare among the kulas of the area, reached by an inner staircase under the veranda. From it one enters a central hall and five rooms. The upper façades have large rectangular panels, there are numerous loopholes, including in the veranda parapet, and the roof is shingled. The look is closer to a boyar manor than to a defensive tower.

### Good to know

The kula is among the sites on the Kulas Route financed through the PNRR (consolidation, restoration and tourist access). No visiting hours published by an official source were found, and some older sources describe it as not part of the public circuit; check with the Gorj County Museum or Glogova town hall whether it can be entered.
