## About “Anastasie Fătu” Botanical Garden, Iași

The “Anastasie Fătu” Botanical Garden belongs to “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași and spreads over Copou Hill. Its story begins in 1856, when the physician and naturalist Anastasie Fătu founded the country's first botanical garden in the city, on land bought with his own money, near Râpa Galbenă. After his death in 1886 the land was sold and the collections were scattered. The university later kept smaller botanical gardens, and in 1963–1964 it moved the garden to its present site on Dumbrava Roșie Street. The university's website gives the area as 87.95 hectares; Wikipedia speaks of about 100.

The garden is divided into sections: systematic, ornamental, useful plants, phytogeographic, dendrological, rose garden, “Flora and vegetation of Romania” and “Moldavian Forest-Steppe”, plus the greenhouse complex. According to Wikipedia, the “Flora and vegetation of Romania” section is the largest, at 25 hectares. A section for visually impaired visitors has its own place, with aromatic plants accompanied by explanations in Braille.

### What you can see

The paths lead to the rose garden, to the water-lily pool in the systematic section, to a lake fringed with reeds and to meadows of wild flowers. In the greenhouses next to the administrative pavilion there are collections of palms, cacti and tropical and subtropical plants; Wikipedia counts about 2,200 taxa in the greenhouse complex.

The garden hosts annual exhibitions: exotic plants (azaleas and camellias) in winter, mushrooms and, above all, “Flori de toamnă” (Autumn Flowers), with chrysanthemums, pumpkins and ornamental peppers, which draws tens of thousands of visitors.
