## About Vasile Fati Botanical Garden, Jibou

The Jibou Botanical Garden was founded in 1968 by Vasile Fati, a natural sciences teacher who had taught biology at the town's high school and began with a few hectares of the former Wesselényi family park. The ministry approved it the same year, and the garden has since grown to about 24 hectares (sources give between 24 and 30), on a terrace of the Someș, at the edge of the town. Today it is run by the Jibou Biological Research Centre and, according to the county's tourist brochure, it brings together more than 5,000 plant species.

The castle park, once laid out in the English style, was turned into a botanical garden in the communist period. The Baroque castle, built between 1778 and 1810, can be seen from the entrance, at the end of the ornamental parterre with its artesian fountain.

### What you can see

Near the entrance is the ornamental sector, with a Baroque park on two terraces, a small alpine garden and beds of tulips, dahlias and other seasonal flowers. Further on lies the Japanese garden, with water-lily lakes, pavilions, red bridges and a miniature Mount Fuji; there are also a Roman garden, a sector of medicinal plants and arboretums with species from Asia and North America.

The greenhouse complex includes a dome with palms, a hall with the Victoria amazonica water lily, orchids, Mediterranean plants and more than 750 species of cacti and succulents. Next to them are the aquariums with tropical fish and the Amazon Gallery, and among the paths there is also a small park with deer, mouflon and wild boar.

### Good to know

Wesselényi Castle can be seen from the garden, but it is not part of the visiting route: from what I found, it has a private owner, a legal dispute and no entry, and I found no visiting hours for the interior. The outbuildings (the stable, the riding hall, the crypt) belong to the Biological Research Centre, which wants to restore them.

## Don't miss

- The Japanese garden, with water-lily lakes, pavilions, red bridges and the miniature Mount Fuji.
- The greenhouse dome with palms and the pool with the Victoria amazonica water lily.
- The collection of more than 750 species of cacti and succulents in the greenhouses.
- The aquariums with tropical fish and the Amazon Gallery, with mist and waterfalls.
- The Baroque park in front of the castle and the tulips that bloom in April–May.
