Published on 3 November 2026 · Facts checked on 3 November 2026

For your first days on skis you need a green or blue slope, short, with a drag lift or a magic carpet at the bottom, and a ski area with a ski school. In Romania you find them, among others, at **[Poiana Brașov](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/poiana-brasov)** (Bradul and Stadion), **[Straja](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/straja)** (the Baloo school slope and three floodlit blue slopes), **[Parâng Ski Resort](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/statiunea-parang)** (Pârtia A, with a conveyor and a baby ski lift), **[Păltiniș](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/paltinis)** (Arena Platoș) and **[Harghita Mădăraș Ski Area](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/harghita-madaras)** (a 300 m school slope). The colours are set by the homologation rules: green means a very easy slope, blue easy, red intermediate, black difficult.

Below you will find the colours explained, a table of ski areas with easy slopes, then, area by area, where they are, what they offer children and which areas have a ski school. All the resorts, with kilometres of slopes and altitudes, are in the [guide to ski slopes in Romania](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/guides/partii-de-schi-romania).

## In short

- Ski slope colours in Romania come from the homologation rules (Order No. 491/2001): green = very easy (average gradient of at most 10%), blue = easy (at most 20%), red = intermediate (30%), black = difficult (40%).
- In Poiana Brașov beginners have the Bradul (430 m, floodlit) and Stadion (612 m) slopes, both rated “easy” by the operator, plus a magic carpet at the snowpark for children under 12 (November 2026).
- At Straja the Baloo slope, 100 m long, green, with a magic carpet, is used only for ski school lessons; Platoul Soarelui, Sf. Gheorghe and Constantinescu are blue and floodlit in the evening.
- According to their own pages, Poiana Brașov, Straja, Parâng, Arena Platoș, Toplița, Cavnic, Șuior, Pârtia Bucovina, Izvoare, Azuga and Muntele Băișorii have a magic carpet or a baby ski lift for children.
- Ski areas with a ski school or instructors on site include Poiana Brașov, Straja, Rânca, Păltiniș, Muntele Mic, Mădăraș, Arieșeni, Gărâna, Râușor, Izvoare and Borșa; by law, ski schools on the slopes may only be run by certified ski instructors.
- Luna Șes, Rarău and Piatra Grăitoare have no blue or green slope to ski down: they are not for first steps, although Piatra Grăitoare has a short beginners' drag lift at the top.

## Ski slope colours: green, blue, red and black

The difficulty grade of a homologated slope in Romania is set when it is homologated, according to the criteria in the Ministry of Tourism rules (Order No. 491/2001), and is shown on the sign at the top of the slope and on the markers:

- **green**: very easy slope, with an average gradient of at most 10% and a width of at least 30 m;
- **blue**: easy slope, average gradient of at most 20%, width of at least 30 m;
- **red**: intermediate slope, average gradient of at most 30%, width of at least 20 m;
- **black**: difficult slope, average gradient of at most 40%, width of at least 20 m.

The markers along the edge of the slope are 45 cm discs painted in the colour of the grade, with the name of the slope in the middle. Besides the colour, the sign at the top shows the length, the vertical drop, the minimum width and the average gradient. Link runs between slopes have orange, diamond-shaped markers.

The gradient is an average: a red slope can start gently and then have a steep wall, like the red slope at [Mărișel Ski Slopes](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/partia-marisel). Some operators also give intermediate grades: Drumul Roșu in Poiana Brașov is “easy-intermediate”, and Mutu, at Straja, is marked red and blue. The black slopes and the hardest ones in the country are in the [records guide](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/guides/cea-mai-lunga-partie-din-romania).

## Ski slopes for kids: magic carpets, baby lifts and rules

For a child who is learning, what matters is going up without a drag lift: according to their own pages, Poiana Brașov (under 12s, at the snowpark), Straja (on Baloo), Parâng, Arena Platoș, Toplița, Cavnic, Șuior, Pârtia Bucovina, Izvoare, Azuga and Buscat have a magic carpet or a baby ski lift.

A few rules published by the operators:

- at Predeal, children under 12 ride the chairlift only if accompanied, on every chair, by an adult or an instructor;
- at Buscat and at Parâng, small children ride the chairlift only with an adult;
- at Izvoare, skiing on the artificial slope is recommended from about age 6, with an instructor for beginners;
- at Bucin Pass, the ski club at the Bogdan slopes takes children aged 3 to 7;
- at Semenic, children ski with a helmet.

Many operators let small children ride for free (the age varies: under 4, 5 or 6); the exact prices are on each ski area's page. For children who only want a sledge or tubing, see the [guide to sledding slopes](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/guides/partii-de-sanius).

## Ski schools: which ski areas have a school or instructors

The rules for operating ski slopes say that on recreational slopes ski schools may be organised and run only by certified ski instructors. This guide does not name companies: the ski area pages only say whether there is a school or instructors at the slope.

**A ski (and snowboard) school** in the ski area: [Poiana Brașov](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/poiana-brasov), [Straja](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/straja), [Rânca](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/ranca), [Păltiniș](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/paltinis) (Arena Platoș), [Muntele Mic](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/muntele-mic), [Rarău Ski Slope](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/partia-rarau), [Râușor Ski Area](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/partia-rausor), [Gărâna](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/garana), [Harghita Mădăraș Ski Area](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/harghita-madaras), [Izvoare Mountain Resort](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/statiunea-izvoare) and [Arieșeni](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/arieseni); [Borșa Resort](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/statiunea-borsa) has ski and snowboard lessons, and [Bucovina Ski Slope](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/partia-bucovina) lessons for children.

**Instructors at the slope**: [Muntele Băișorii](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/muntele-baisorii), [Casa Baraj Ski Slope](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/partia-casa-baraj), [Bucin Pass Ski Slopes](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/partiile-de-la-pasul-bucin), [Parâng Ski Resort](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/statiunea-parang), [SkiGyimes](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/skigyimes), [Șugaș Băi](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/sugas-bai) and [Șuior](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/suior).

At Rarău and Șugaș Băi the slopes are of intermediate difficulty, so the school there is for those who are past their first runs. The price of a lesson is not published on the ski area pages: ask the school directly, via the ski area's website.

## Ski slopes that are not for beginners

Some small ski areas look right for a first day, but have no green or blue slope:

- [Luna Șes](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/luna-ses), the only ski slope in Satu Mare County, is homologated red, for skiers with some experience;
- [Rarău Ski Slope](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/partia-rarau) has a single run, 2.84 km long, of intermediate difficulty, with a gondola and no drag lift;
- [Piatra Grăitoare Ski Slope](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/partia-piatra-graitoare) has a red and a black variant; beginners only have a short drag lift at the top, and the easy slopes are at Arieșeni, a few hundred metres away;
- at [Șugaș Băi](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/sugas-bai) both slopes are of intermediate difficulty.

The ski slope at Piatra Neamț, on [Mount Cozla and the Gondola](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/cozla-piatra-neamt), no longer operates: the last ski season there was the winter of 2018–2019. How to choose a resort by criteria other than level is in the [pillar guide](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/guides/partii-de-schi-romania#cum-alegi-statiunea), and evening skiing in the section on [night skiing](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/guides/partii-de-schi-romania#schi-nocturn).

## Frequently asked questions

**What do ski slope colours mean?**

Under Romania's homologation rules, green means a very easy slope (average gradient of at most 10%), blue easy (at most 20%), red intermediate (at most 30%) and black difficult (at most 40%). The colour is on the sign at the top of the slope and on the markers along the edge.

**What is a red ski slope?**
