Below are the sights in the city by area, how to combine them in a day or a weekend, what is open in winter, what to do with children, in the evening or when it rains and what to see nearby, 8–30 km away. ## Brașov centre: Council Square and the Black Church

[Council Square (Piața Sfatului)](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/piata-sfatului-brasov) is the main square of the old town, pedestrian, enclosed by colourful houses, with Tâmpa above the roofs. In the middle stands the **Council House**, the former town hall, with the tower built in 1521–1528 and the four-faced clock brought from Germany in 1892. The building has been a museum since 1950: the County History Museum, with the exhibition on the revolt of 15 November 1987, is open Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–18:00, and the adult ticket costs 12 lei. On the east side are the arcades of the **Merchants' House** (Hirscher House), from the 16th century, and on the north-west side, at no. 25, the [Casa Mureșenilor Museum](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/casa-muresenilor), with the archive of the family that ran the “Gazeta Transilvaniei” and the manuscript of the poem “Un răsunet” by Andrei Mureșanu, the author of the lyrics of the national anthem (Tuesday–Saturday 9:00–17:00, 8 lei).

In the south-west corner of the square is [The Black Church](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/biserica-neagra), built by the Saxons between 1383 and 1477: 89 m long, a 65 m tower, the Buchholz organ of 1839 with 3,993 pipes, and a collection of almost two hundred Anatolian carpets. The adult ticket costs 30 lei, and children under 7 get in free. About 300 m towards Poarta Șchei, [Strada Sforii (Rope Street)](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/strada-sforii), the passage 1.1–1.35 m wide, has been closed since 18 November 2025 while the façades are made safe. From the north corner of the square starts the pedestrian Strada Republicii. Also on the square, behind a red and yellow brick façade with an octagonal tower, stands the [Dormition of the Mother of God Church in Cetate](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/biserica-adormirea-maicii-domnului-cetate-brasov), the Neo-Byzantine Orthodox church consecrated in 1899.

## Șchei: Catherine's Gate and St Nicholas Church

Strada Poarta Șchei runs down from the centre towards the old Romanian district. On it, at no. 29, in a courtyard, is the [Neolog Synagogue (Beit Israel)](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/sinagoga-neologa-brasov), from 1899–1901, with a red-brick façade; you enter with a donation of 20 lei, and on Saturdays, the Sabbath, it cannot be visited. At the end of the street, ~450 m from Council Square, is [Catherine's Gate](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/poarta-ecaterinei), the only surviving medieval gate of the citadel, a white tower from 1559 with four turrets; next to it is the Șchei Gate, the neoclassical arch of 1827–1828.

Beyond the gates, along Strada Prundului, you reach Piața Unirii in 12–15 minutes and [St Nicholas Church in Șchei](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/biserica-sfantul-nicolae-din-schei), begun in 1495 and finished in 1519, with frescoes on the façades and the grave of Nicolae Titulescu in the churchyard cemetery. The parish publishes no opening hours or fee; restoration work runs until December 2028, so there may be scaffolding. In the same courtyard, the [First Romanian School](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/prima-scoala-romaneasca) is visited with a guide: the classroom with wooden benches, the replica of Coresi's printing press and old books (20 lei, 10 lei for pupils and students). From here, **Aleea Tiberiu Brediceanu** runs below the south-east walls, at the foot of Tâmpa, past the [Ropemakers' Bastion](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/bastionul-funarilor), first recorded in 1416, and the [Drapers' Bastion](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/bastionul-postavarilor), an elliptical tower of ~20 m, closed until the restoration begun in 2025 is complete. On the west side, **Aleea După Ziduri** passes under the arch of the [Graft Bastion](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/bastionul-graft), from 1515–1521. Above, on the hill, are two 15th-century watchtowers: the [Black Tower](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/turnul-negru-brasov), ~10 minutes from the square, and the [White Tower](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/turnul-alb-brasov), at the top of a long, steep stairway that starts next to the Graft Bastion. Their interiors are closed, but the platforms are free and have one of the best views of the centre. About 1 km north, on Citadel Hill, the [Brașov Fortress (Cetățuia)](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/cetatuia-brasovului) can only be seen from the outside: work has been under way since May 2026, and the City Hall aims to open the courtyard in the second half of 2027.

[Mount Tâmpa](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/muntele-tampa) rises to 960 m, almost 400 m above Council Square, and has been a nature reserve since 1980. The lower cable car station is on Aleea Tiberiu Brediceanu, ~10 minutes from the square. The cable car, modernised and reopened in October 2025, goes up in ~2 minutes; it runs Monday 12:30–22:00, Tuesday–Thursday and Sunday 10:30–22:00, Friday and Saturday 10:30–22:30. The return trip costs 45 lei for adults and 30 lei for children aged 6–12, and under-6s ride free (2026 prices).

At the top, a path through the forest leads to the platform next to the “BRAȘOV” letters, with Council Square, the Black Church and Șchei below. On foot, the **Serpentine Road** (Drumul Serpentinelor), marked with a red triangle, has 25 hairpin bends and takes about an hour to climb; **Gabony's Steps** (Treptele lui Gabony), marked with a yellow triangle, are steeper, with over 160 stone steps. ## What to do in Brașov in one day or in 2 days

**One day** is enough for the historic centre. Morning: Council Square and the Black Church, then Strada Poarta Șchei, Catherine's Gate and St Nicholas Church with the First Romanian School, in Șchei. Afternoon: the Weavers' Bastion and the alley below Tâmpa, then the cable car up Tâmpa. In the evening, come down by the cable car, which runs until 22:00. Choose a day from Tuesday to Sunday, because on Mondays the museums and the bastion are closed.

**The second day** is for the western walls and a trip: in the morning the Black Tower and the White Tower, with the view of the centre, and the Art Museum or the Ethnographic Museum on Bulevardul Eroilor; in the afternoon the zoo, Poiana Brașov or a short trip from the section on the surroundings: Hărman is ~12 km away, Râșnov ~15 km. If you have a whole extra day, Bran Castle is ~30 km away, with Râșnov on the way.

## Brașov in winter, during the Christmas market

In winter, Council Square belongs to the [Brașov Christmas market](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/guides/targuri-de-craciun-romania#brasov); the dates, opening hours and what you find at the market are in the guide, and access and parking on the page of [Council Square (Piața Sfatului)](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/piata-sfatului-brasov). The stalls and the stage cover part of the square and part of the view of the Council House. For the rest of the day, here is what changes in the city in the cold months:

- **The Black Church** closes at 18:00 (winter schedule from 16 October until April) and is closed on 25 December and 1 January.
- **The Art Museum** and **the Ethnographic Museum** are on their winter schedule, 9:00–17:00.

- **The Tâmpa cable car** also runs until 22:00 in winter, with the city lit up below; the paths are slippery.

Towards the mountains, the ski season at [Poiana Brașov](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/poiana-brasov) depends on the snow: last season it only began on 2 January 2026 (see [when the ski slopes open](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/guides/cand-se-deschid-partiile)). ## What to do in Brașov in the evening or when it rains

**In the evening**, the Tâmpa cable car runs until 22:00 (Friday and Saturday until 22:30), and from the platform next to the letters you see the city and the illuminated letters. The Synagogue can be visited Monday–Thursday until 19:30.

**When it rains**, stay in the centre, where the distances are short: the Black Church, the History Museum in the Council House and the Casa Mureșenilor, on Council Square, then the Art Museum and the Ethnographic Museum, next to each other on Bulevardul Eroilor. A single ticket of 25 lei for adults covers the Art Museum, the Ethnographic Museum, the History Museum and the Casa Mureșenilor. Council Square and the streets inside the citadel are pedestrian or have very few spaces. The historic centre is a paid parking zone, by SMS or app; the simplest option is to leave the car in a paid car park on the edge of the centre, for example on **Aleea Tiberiu Brediceanu**, below Tâmpa, or around **Bulevardul Eroilor**, a 5–10 minute walk from the square. In summer and at weekends they fill up quickly.

**Brașov railway station** is ~3 km from the centre: bus 4 takes you in ~15 minutes to Livada Poștei, ~5 minutes from Council Square. Bus 20 leaves from Livada Poștei for Poiana Brașov, and the buses for Bran leave from Autogara 2. **Brașov-Ghimbav Airport** is ~15 km away. By car, from Bucharest it is ~170 km through the Prahova Valley (~3 hours, longer at weekends), from Sibiu ~145 km on the DN1 (~2 hours 30 minutes), from Cluj-Napoca ~270 km (~4 hours 30 minutes).
