## Cetățuia: the view over Cluj from above

[Cetățuia Fortress (Cluj-Napoca)](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/cetatuia-cluj-napoca) stands on the hill above the centre, less than a kilometre from Piața Unirii, with the remains of an 18th-century Austrian fortification: gate buildings, a former powder magazine and stretches of wall. From the terrace on the plateau you see the whole centre, with the tower of St Michael's Church in the foreground; at the edge is the 26 m metal cross, from 1995.

The best-known way up starts on Strada Galileo Galilei and continues up steps through the woods, ~15–20 minutes uphill. There is no ticket and no opening hours: the hill is a public space, and the buildings are not a museum. You can also drive up to the plateau, but the spaces fill up quickly in the evening, at sunset. In winter, the wet or icy steps are slippery.

It has a central alley lined with old trees and Chios Lake, with the Casino on its shore. Entry is free.

Boats and pedal boats can be hired on the lake in the warm season: in 2026 they started on 18 April, 11:00–19:00, closed on Mondays, 24 lei for adults and 13 lei for children aged 4–14, for 30 minutes. In August, part of the park is taken over by the Untold festival.

## The Ethnographic Park and Hoia-Baciu Forest

On Hoia hill, on the western edge of the city, are two neighbouring sights. The [Romulus Vuia National Ethnographic Park](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/parcul-etnografic-romulus-vuia), the first open-air museum in Romania, has farmsteads, workshops and three wooden churches on ~16 hectares. From the city, take buses 26, 27, 28, 30 or 41 to the “Piața 14 Iulie” stop, then walk.

Next to it begins [Hoia-Baciu Forest](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/padurea-hoia-baciu), ~300 hectares of crooked trees and Poiana Rotundă (the Round Glade), the setting of the “paranormal” legends. Entry is free, usually by way of the Ethnographic Park. The paths are not lit: do not go in after dark without a guide. A loop that includes Poiana Rotundă takes ~2 hours.

Also in the west, in the Mănăștur district, ~4 km from the centre, is the [Calvaria Church](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/biserica-calvaria-cluj-napoca), with the Gothic choir of the old Benedictine abbey.

## What to see in Cluj in one day or in 2 days

**One day** is enough for the old centre. Morning: Piața Unirii, St Michael's Church between services and Bánffy Palace at opening time, at 10:00. Then the Matthias Corvinus House, Museum Square with the Franciscan Church and the History Museum or the Pharmacy Museum. Afternoon: the Firemen's Tower, the Reformed Church and the Tailors' Bastion, then Avram Iancu Square, with the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Theatre. In the evening, climb Cetățuia at sunset. Choose a day from Wednesday to Sunday: on Mondays the museums are closed, and on Tuesdays Bánffy Palace as well.

**The second day** is for greenery and the edge of the city: the Botanical Garden in the morning, with ~2 hours for the greenhouses and the Japanese garden, then Central Park and Chios Lake. In the afternoon, the Ethnographic Park on Hoia hill and a short walk, in daylight, in Hoia-Baciu Forest. If you have a third day, pick a trip from the section on the surroundings: the Turda Salt Mine and Turda Gorge are 30–38 km away.

**On Sundays** almost everything is open: the museums, the Botanical Garden and the Firemen's Tower; just keep in mind the services at St Michael's and at the Franciscan Church.

## Cluj in winter, during the Christmas market

In winter, Piața Unirii belongs to the Christmas market, with its stalls around St Michael's Church; the dates and what you find at the market are in [the Cluj section of the Christmas markets guide](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/guides/targuri-de-craciun-romania#cluj-napoca) and on the page of [Piața Unirii (Union Square)](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/piata-unirii-cluj-napoca). Otherwise, a few opening hours change in winter:

- **The Firemen's Tower** is open daily 09:00–17:00 in the cold season.
- **The museums** in the centre keep the same hours all year round.
- **The Botanical Garden** closes at 17:00, and the greenhouses at 16:00; it is closed at Christmas (25–26 December) and on 1 and 24 January.
- **The Ethnographic Park** is on its winter schedule, Wednesday–Sunday 09:00–16:00.
- **The Reformed Church** is open only Monday–Friday 9:00–14:00, and **Hajongard Cemetery** closes at 17:00.
- On **Cetățuia**, the steps can be icy.

For skiing, the nearest is the [Feleacu Ski Slope](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/partia-feleacu), ~10 km away, with a drag lift and a floodlit slope, open when the cold allows snowmaking; towards the Apuseni Mountains are the [Mărișel Ski Slopes](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/partia-marisel) and [Muntele Băișorii](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/muntele-baisorii), ~55 km away.
