## About Haller Castle in Ogra

The castle at Ogra stands beside the E60 European road (DN15, Turda–Târgu Mureș), on the bank of the Mureș. Its foundations date from the 17th century, when the village and estate had come into the hands of the Haller family, Transylvanian nobles who had settled first in Sibiu and then across Transylvania, and who held the place for almost three centuries. Today's building, a long two-storey block with a high tiled roof and dormer windows, took its present form between the 18th and 19th centuries in the Late Baroque style. After Ștefan Haller's grandson was made a baron and later a count, the estate was divided among brothers: the castle at Ogra went to Ladislau, the one at Sânpaul to his brother Gabriel.

Nationalised in 1949, the castle served in turn as a school, a boarding school, the seat of the People's Council and, in the 1990s, a kindergarten, a mill and a bakery, ending up almost in ruins. After restitution it was sold to the Fóris family of Târgu Mureș, who restored it with an architect specialising in historic monuments, working from old photographs and descriptions. Since 2011–2012 it has run as a hotel, restaurant and wine cellar; since 2015 it also has a leisure centre with salt-water pools, fed by a borehole in the castle courtyard itself.

### What you can see

The main façade, in yellow and white, with arcades on the ground floor, a fountain in the front courtyard and a small corner turret, is easy to appreciate from outside, as is the garden with its terrace. The vaulted cellar, dating from the Haller era, is a wine cellar seating 100; a legend says a tunnel once ran from here to the castle at Sânpaul. The rooms, some with vaulted walls and old-style furniture, and the restaurant on the upper floor can only be seen by guests.

### Good to know

The castle is private property and works as a hotel, so no tours or public opening hours are advertised. You go in as a guest (accommodation), at the restaurant, at the cellar or at events (weddings, christenings, wine tastings), by reservation. Without one of those reasons, the castle is seen from outside, from the fence and the road. When checked (October 2026), the official website was temporarily under maintenance; confirm opening times and prices by phone.
