## About Harghita-Băi

Harghita-Băi (Hargitafürdő in Hungarian) is a mountain resort in Harghita county, set at about 1,300 m on the south-eastern slope of the Harghita Mountains, and a component locality of the municipality of Miercurea Ciuc. The place grew up around its mineral springs and mofettes, and later around the nearby kaolin quarry, which closed in 2005. The warm mineral-water bath was closed in 1950; the mofette, where dry gas baths are taken, has survived.

Today Harghita-Băi is above all a ski resort for beginners and intermediate skiers: the runs come down through the forest straight between the resort's houses and guesthouses. In summer it is a place of fresh air and a starting point for the waymarked trails on the Harghita ridge.

### What you can see

The houses and guesthouses are scattered across an open slope, surrounded by dense spruce forest, with the rounded summits of the Harghita above. The main runs, Kossuth, Miklós and Csipike, are cut through the forest and can be seen from the resort; an old two-seater chairlift also climbs through the forest.

Waymarked trails lead from the resort to the summits of the range, among them Harghita Mădăraș (1,801 m), the highest peak of the Harghita Mountains.

### Good to know

The runs have different operators, and the lifts only run in the winter season, depending on snow. The mofette is only open in the warm season, roughly from May to November, depending on the weather.

## Don't miss

- The Kossuth, Miklós and Csipike runs, cut through the spruce forest down to the resort's houses.
- The old two-seater chairlift climbing through the forest above the resort.
- The hike along the Harghita ridge towards Harghita Mădăraș peak (1,801 m).
- The resort's mofette, with natural gas baths, open in the warm season.

## Good to know before you go

### Getting there

**By car:** from Miercurea Ciuc, take the DN13A towards Odorheiu Secuiesc, then climb the DJ138A to the resort: ~21 km (~25 minutes). From Brașov it is ~122 km (~2 hours), via Miercurea Ciuc. In winter the mountain road may be covered in snow: carry chains or winter tyres.

### Where to park

Cars are left at the foot of the runs and along the roadsides in the resort. On snowy winter weekends the resort gets crowded.

### Fees & discounts

Entry to the resort is free. The runs have different operators, each with its own prices for ski passes (by the hour, by the day or for several days) and for single rides; prices may change from one season to the next.

### Rules

On the slopes, keep to the markings and safety rules. In the mountains, stay on waymarked trails, with warm clothes and suitable footwear, as the weather changes quickly. Bears live in the surrounding forests: do not leave food or rubbish behind and do not feed the animals. Baths in the mofette are taken only according to the posted rules, because of the gas.
