## About Ighiu Earth Fort

On the top of Măgulici hill, at 492 m, about 1.5 km south-west of Ighiu village, the Romans built a small earth fort at the entrance to the gold-bearing region of the province of Dacia. Its commanding position gave views in every direction and towards the legionary base at Apulum, present-day Alba Iulia, about 10 km away. The garrison watched the road that climbed through the Ampoi gorge towards Zlatna and Roșia Montană. The site was discovered in 1956 by Professor Mihail Macrea. Its dating is uncertain: a coin from the time of Marcus Aurelius, found in more recent research, points to use in the 2nd century.

The fortification was rectangular with rounded corners, about 50 × 41 m, with the long sides running east–west. It consisted of an earth rampart, surviving to about 1.5 m in height, and a ditch in front of the north and west sides. Access was only from the west, the other slopes being very steep. Finds include iron hobnails from footwear, fragments of pottery and glass, a stylus, an iron key and a fragment of a bronze mount.

### What you can see

There are no stone walls: the fort can be read in the terrain through the earth rampart and ditch that still follow the outline of the fortification, on a grassy hilltop. The main attraction is the view: towards the Ampoi valley, the surrounding villages and, on clear days, Alba Iulia. The Dacian Fortresses Festival, with reenactments of battles between Dacians and Romans, has also been held on the hill (the June 2024 edition).

### Good to know

The site is open-air, on a hill with no facilities: no toilets and no Wi-Fi, and access for people with disabilities is not provided. The climb is along dirt tracks and a path; avoid rainy weather. The "România Atractivă" programme (Roman Forts Route) lists it as visitable, with free entry.

## Don't miss

- The earth rampart of about 1.5 m and the ditch that still mark the outline of the 50 × 41 m fort.
- The view from the summit of Măgulici over the Ampoi valley and, in clear weather, Alba Iulia.
- The fort's position at the gateway of the Roman gold road from Apulum towards Zlatna and Roșia Montană.
