## About Jimbor Fortress

Jimbor Fortress stands on a hill near the village of Jimbor (German Sommerburg, Hungarian Székelyzsombor), in Homorod commune, on the old road leading from Rupea towards the Székely Land. It is a peasant fortress, that is, a refuge the village community kept ready for times of danger, with stone walls, towers and rooms where supplies were stored.

Little is known about its beginnings. Some historians link it to the second half of the 13th century, others date it to the 15th–16th centuries, and the first certain mention is from the 17th century. The *-burg* ending in the village's German name, however, appears in documents as early as the 15th century, which shows that a fortification existed here earlier. An old inscription on a stone plaque speaks of a restoration in 1692. In 2022, archaeologists from the "Vasile Pârvan" Institute opened six trial trenches and found, among other things, traces of a wall older than the present enclosure.

The complex is a listed historic monument (LMI code BV-II-a-A-11724), but it has become a ruin: the roofs are broken, and the walls have cracks and vegetation at their base.

### What you can see

The stone enclosure is an irregular polygon and preserves towers with hipped roofs, a gatehouse and long stretches of wall with small loopholes and openings for firing. The most striking sight is the silhouette of the towers and walls along the hilltop, with plaster fallen away in places to show the stone. On one wall you can still make out a stone plaque with a shell-shaped ornament and an almost faded inscription.

### Good to know

The fortress is not set up for visitors: no official opening hours or ticket have been found, and the buildings are in poor condition, so the walls are best viewed from outside, watching for pieces of plaster or roof that may fall. A rehabilitation project for the fortress was in preparation in 2022; no information has been found about works having begun. The Evangelical church in Jimbor, in the village, is a separate sight.

## Don't miss

- The hipped-roof tower and the curtain wall along the hilltop, seen from below across the grass.
- The stone plaque with a shell-shaped ornament and a faded inscription on the tower wall.
- The long stretches of wall with small loopholes, seen from inside the enclosure.
- The view over Jimbor village and the surrounding hills from the fortress hill.

## Good to know before you go

### Getting there

**By car:** Jimbor is on the DJ 132, the road linking Rupea with the Harghita county border via Homorod and Mercheașa. Rupea, the nearest town, is on the DN13 (E60), between Brașov and Sighișoara. The fortress is on the hill at the edge of the village, a few hundred metres from the road; the last stretch is on foot.

**Public transport:** no verified connections to Jimbor have been found. Rupea has a railway station and coaches on the Brașov–Sighișoara route, and from there you need a car or taxi.

### Where to park

There is no known marked car park; cars are left in the village or at the roadside, without blocking access.

### Rules

The walls and roofs are in poor condition: do not enter the buildings or climb on the walls. Keep the site clean; it is a listed monument, so do not scratch the walls or take anything away.
