## About Jupiter–Cap Aurora

Jupiter and Cap Aurora are two resorts that run into each other on the southern coast, a few kilometres north of Mangalia: Jupiter comes straight after Neptun, and Cap Aurora links it with Venus. Both are component localities of the municipality of Mangalia, and both have the Comorova forest behind them.

Jupiter took its first guests in the summer of 1968, and most of its hotels opened in 1969. Cap Aurora is the youngest and smallest resort in the south: on 1 July 1973 ten hotels named after precious stones opened at once — Agat, Coral, Cristal, Diamant, Granat, Onix, Opal, Rubin, Safir and Topaz — built in less than a year by a team led by the architect Dinu Gheorghiu.

The beach has changed a great deal in recent years. Under the Jupiter–Neptun and Balta Mangalia–Venus–Aurora lots, the national water authority rebuilt the groynes and pumped in new sand in the summer of 2024, including on stretches where there was hardly any beach before; the project aims at a dry strip of about a hundred metres.

### What you can see

At Jupiter the beach is roughly a kilometre long and is cut by stone groynes into small bays, with tall hotels set at right angles to the shore. Right behind the sand lies Lake Tismana, and further back Lake Jupiter, both laid out on the site of the former Comorova marsh. To the south, Cap Aurora sits on a rocky headland: its hotels are grouped in three pyramid-shaped blocks, their floors stepping back towards the sea, among pools, terraces and greenery. Here too is the Cătunul complex, opened in 1974 in a rustic Romanian style.

### Good to know

Mangalia town hall has announced that from autumn 2026 it will rebuild the streets, lighting, paths and green spaces of Jupiter and Cap Aurora; the works are planned to last eighteen months to two years, pausing during the summer season.

## Don't miss

- The Onix and Safir hotels at Cap Aurora, their floors stepping down towards the beach, the most recognisable ensemble in the resort.
- The small bays between the groynes at Jupiter, each with its own strip of sand.
- Lake Tismana, right behind the beach at Jupiter, a remnant of the former Comorova marsh.
- The rocky headland on which Cap Aurora stands, between the bays of Jupiter and the beach at Venus.
- The paths through the Comorova forest, a few minutes' walk from the hotels.

## Good to know before you go

### Getting there

**By car:** the resorts are about 40 km south of Constanța and 5–6 km north of Mangalia, on the DN39 (E87); the turnings are signposted from the main road, between Neptun and Venus. From Bucharest it is roughly 270 km, on the A2 to Constanța and then along the coast road.

**Public transport:** neither resort has its own station. The nearest is Neptun halt, on the Constanța–Mangalia line, some 2–3 km west of Jupiter beyond the Comorova forest; the alternative is Mangalia station. In summer there are also direct trains from Bucharest. The town hall's electric buses link Mangalia with all the southern resorts, Jupiter and Cap Aurora included; after several years of free travel, a journey has cost 4 lei since August 2026.

### Where to park

Public parking in the Mangalia resorts is run by the town hall. In June 2025 the local council suspended hourly parking charges for that summer in the town and in all its resorts, Jupiter and Cap Aurora included; the rate approved before that was 5 lei an hour in the resorts. The position for 2026 has not been confirmed publicly, and hotel car parks have their own rules, so it is worth asking where you stay.

### Fees & discounts

Access to the beach is free; on the equipped sections you pay only for a sunbed and an umbrella, at the rates displayed by each operator, and stretches of free beach remain between them. Anyone staying in Jupiter or Cap Aurora pays a special resort tax of 5 lei per adult per day, collected by the accommodation; war veterans and war widows are exempt.

### Rules

The beach is public property: under Emergency Ordinance 19/2006, sector operators may not block access or passage. No driving cars or quad bikes on the sand, no camping and no street selling. Dogs are allowed only with the operator's agreement and on a lead. Follow the flags at the lifeguard posts: red over yellow — supervised area, yellow — swimming not advised, red — bathing forbidden.

### Facilities

Lifeguard posts and first aid points in season · sections with sunbeds and umbrellas, plus stretches of free beach · bars and restaurants on and behind the beach · swimming pools at many hotels · electric buses to Mangalia and the other resorts · access with a pushchair or wheelchair is difficult on the sand
