## About Lacu Sărat Resort

Lacu Sărat resort lies in the commune of Chiscani, about 5 km from Brăila, on the Bărăgan plain. It grew up on the shore of a lake formed in an old bed of the Danube, now cut off from the river. The lake covers about 172 ha (1.72 km²) and is on average about 1.5 m deep, with a forest several dozen hectares in size around it. Its water is hypertonic, with a mineralisation of 70–84 g/l, and on the bottom lies a sapropelic mud used for treatments.

The properties of the water and mud were used here as early as the second half of the 19th century. A 1903 survey counted 31 villas and hotels in the resort, with about 600 rooms, several restaurants, a casino and a pharmacy, and before the First World War distinguished guests came here, among them Prince Ferdinand. Local legend says the lake healed the soldiers of Vlad the Impaler. Today the resort has national-interest status, regained in 2021, and is administered by the commune of Chiscani, after a dispute of many years with the city of Brăila.

The treatments (salt-water baths, mud packs, hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, kinetotherapy, massage) are recommended above all for degenerative and inflammatory rheumatic conditions and other diseases of the locomotor system.

### What you can see

On the lake shore is a landscaped beach, and in the resort you will find the English Park, the historic park of the place, and Saint Pantelimon Monastery. The local operator's treatment centre is open all year, and the Alma Health & Spa Retreat complex, opened in 2022, has salt-water pools and a health centre. Arriving by tram from Brăila used to be part of the charm of the place.

### Good to know

The resort has several operators, each with its own timetable and prices, and some of the old buildings have still not been restored. The town halls and councils involved have announced modernisation works (streets, green spaces, the English Park, the beach area), so the look of the place may change from year to year. In May 2024 freshwater algae appeared on the lake, which the operator says do not affect the water or the mud. The tram between Brăila and the resort has been suspended since the beginning of September 2025 because of infrastructure works; check whether it has resumed before relying on it.

## Don't miss

- Baths in hypertonic water and packs of sapropelic mud from the lake.
- The lake of about 172 ha, with forest on its banks, good for a walk.
- The English Park, the resort's historic park, from the days when it had a casino and dozens of villas.
- Saint Pantelimon Monastery, in the middle of the resort.
