## About Neamț Monastery

Neamț Monastery stands in a broad clearing in the valley of the Nemțișor, about 12 km north-west of Neamț Citadel, surrounded by wooded hills. Its beginnings predate any document: tradition speaks of a wooden hermitage, the "White Church", and the oldest surviving deed, of 7 January 1407, shows a monastery already endowed with villages by Petru Mușat, who had also built the first stone church here.

After the earthquake of 1471 weakened the old church, Stephen the Great built a new one, completed and consecrated on 14 November 1497, after the victory at Codrii Cosminului. It is one of his last and largest foundations and is regarded as the high point of the Moldavian style of his time, in which Gothic buttresses and window frames are combined with Byzantine decoration of brick and glazed discs in green, yellow and brown. It is also here that the burial chamber between the narthex and the nave appears for the first time.

For centuries Neamț was the most important cultural centre of Moldavia: the 15th-century calligrapher and miniaturist Gavriil Uric worked here, Abbot Paisius Velichkovsky reorganised monastic life here, and a printing house operated from 1807. The monastery of monks is still active today, with a library of more than 19,000 volumes and the Theological Seminary nearby.

### What you can see

You enter beneath the bell tower, whose ground floor dates from the time of Alexander the Good, through a vaulted passage painted with scenes from the romance "Barlaam and Josaphat". The square enclosure, with arcaded monks' cells, holds Stephen the Great's church on its north side, with facades of stone and coloured ceramics. Inside are the paintings from the founder's time, restored between 1991 and 2004, the tombs of Voivode Stephen II and of Saint Paisius in the burial chamber, and the miracle-working icon of the Mother of God, which tradition dates to the year 665.

In front of the enclosure, to the west, stands the circular blessing-of-water pavilion of 1836–1847, with a mitre-shaped roof, while the monastery's museum collection holds icons, liturgical objects and old printing presses.

### Good to know

It is a working monastery of monks with daily services: enter with shoulders and knees covered, and keep quiet. Thousands of pilgrims come for the patronal feast of the Ascension. The monasteries of Secu and Sihăstria are nearby and easy to combine on the same day.
