## About Războieni Monastery

Războieni Monastery stands in the village of Războieni, about 26 km from Piatra Neamț, on the spot once known as Valea Albă. Here, on 26 July 1476, Stephen the Great's army faced the forces of Sultan Mehmed II. The Moldavians lost the battle, but the Ottomans left the country without subduing it. Twenty years later, in 1496, the prince raised a church in memory of the fallen, dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, whose feast is celebrated on 8 November. Neither Grigore Ureche's chronicle nor the founding inscription says how long the building took.

The church is small and has no tower, built of stone with a band of red brick under a tall, steep roof. Beneath the stone slabs, from the nave to the altar, the bones of fallen soldiers were found, so the place is also a mausoleum. Until 1734 it was a parish church, then a monastery; since 1803 it has been a convent. In the 19th century two small turrets and a porch were added, and in 1862 the bell tower at the entrance. The restoration of 1975–1977 removed the additions and returned the church to its original appearance. The monastery was dissolved in 1959 and reopened in 1990.

### What you can see

The exterior is the most telling part: stone walls with bands of exposed brick, a row of blind niches under the eaves and narrow windows with Gothic surrounds. The doorway on the south side is of carved stone, with a pointed arch and Gothic decoration, and beside it stands the inscription stone. You enter the grounds beneath the stone bell tower, whose two timber storeys hold six bells. In the abbess's residence, the refectory doubles as a small museum, with 19th-century icons and a lithograph of Stephen the Great.

### Good to know

It is a working convent: enter with shoulders and knees covered, and keep quiet. The monastery's website has carried, since 2022, a procurement notice for the design of a restoration and consolidation of the complex; no information on works having started was found.
