## About Văratec Monastery

Văratec Monastery stands in a wide clearing on the edge of the forests, in the village of Văratec in Agapia commune, about 12 km from Târgu Neamț. It was founded by Mother Olimpiada, who between 1781 and 1785 gathered a small community of nuns here, on the advice of Abbot Paisius Velichkovsky of Neamț Monastery. The first church, made of wood, went up in 1785 with the help of the confessor Iosif, who is also regarded as a founder.

The community grew quickly: in 1811 more than 270 nuns lived here, and today there are over 400, which makes Văratec the largest convent in the country. The main church, the Dormition of the Mother of God, was built in 1808–1812, under Abbess Nazaria. In 1832 Safta Brâncoveanu retired here and left her fortune to the monastery. Olimpiada, Nazaria and Safta Brâncoveanu were canonised in 2025. After the fire of 1900, the cells within the grounds were rebuilt almost entirely.

The main church has been restored in recent years with EU funds, and around it stretches a true village of nuns. The poet Veronica Micle withdrew to Văratec after the death of Mihai Eminescu and died here in August 1889.

### What you can see

The white Church of the Dormition, with two towers and an iconostasis of gilded yew wood from 1816. Next to its altar stands the bronze statue of Safta Brâncoveanu, made by Ion Jalea in 1935. You enter the grounds beneath the bell tower, with its mitre-shaped roof, flanked by cells with verandas on columns.

The museum collection, housed in the former "Queen Marie" workshop, holds embroidery, icons, liturgical vessels, manuscripts and crosses. The monastic village also has the churches of the Nativity of St John the Baptist and of the Transfiguration, and next to the former, the grave of Veronica Micle, the only one left from the old cemetery.
