## About Voroneț Monastery

Voroneț Monastery is the best known of Bukovina's painted churches and one of Romania's defining images. The church of St George was built by Stephen the Great in 1488, in just three months and three weeks, on the spot where the hermit Daniil lived, the confessor who, according to the chronicler Neculce, urged the prince not to submit Moldavia to the Turks and to build a monastery here after his victory. Daniil the Hermit is buried in the narthex and painted as a saint on the south facade.

The interior was painted in 1496, and in 1547 Metropolitan Grigorie Roșca, counted as the third founder, added the closed porch and had all the outer walls painted. Since then the church has looked like an open book: hundreds of scenes and saints on an intense blue background that has never been reproduced anywhere else, and which specialists simply call "Voroneț blue". For its frescoes, Voroneț was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993, together with other painted churches of northern Moldavia.

After Austria annexed Bukovina, the monastery was dissolved in 1785 and for two centuries the church was merely a village church. Monastic life returned in 1991 with a community of nuns, who look after the church today and guide visitors.

### What you can see

The west wall, which has no windows, is entirely covered by the Last Judgment, in five registers: God the Father at the top, then Christ as judge, and below them the river of fire flowing to hell, the weighing of souls, paradise with the righteous, the resurrection of the dead and the animals giving back the bodies they had swallowed. Among the damned are Turks and Tatars, Moldavia's enemies of the day, and the angels blow the bucium, the long horn of the mountain shepherds. It is the largest scene of its kind in Romanian painting.

On the south facade are the Tree of Jesse, Christ's genealogy on a blue ground, and the Akathist of the Mother of God; in the porch, the Orthodox calendar with a saint for every day of the year. The north facade, beaten by wind and rain, is largely worn away. Inside, the votive painting shows Stephen the Great with his family offering the church to St George; the tomb of St Daniil is in the narthex. In the grounds are the bell tower, the enclosure wall and the nuns' stone cells.

### Good to know

The exterior painting was last restored between 1979 and 1988 and, with no new restoration since, has damaged areas, especially on the north side; in early 2026 the monastery was still waiting for funding for the roof and for conservation work. It is a working monastery: enter with shoulders and knees covered, keep quiet, and note that during services there are no guided tours and no photography.
