## About Maramureș Village Museum “Mihai Dăncuș”

On Dobăieș Hill, at the edge of Sighetu Marmației, a Maramureș village has been recreated from homesteads brought from every corner of historical Maramureș: log houses with shingle roofs, porches, carved gates, barns, wells and woven fences. The museum was inaugurated in 1981, after the collecting of buildings began in 1972, and the collection is still being added to.

More than 30 homesteads are grouped by the sub-zones of Maramureș: Cosău-Mara, Lower and Middle Iza, Strâmtura, Vișeu-Borșa, the Tisza valley and the Ruscova basin. Besides the Romanian houses there is a Ukrainian dwelling, a Hungarian one and two Jewish houses, one of them fitted out as a village synagogue. The museum bears the name of Mihai Dăncuș, the director who made a major contribution to its founding.

### What you can see

All the lanes and paths lead to the wooden church brought from Oncești, in the Iza valley, the oldest building in the museum: its beams, reused from an earlier church, have been dated between 1572 and 1614. On the way you pass houses with porches, barns, farm outbuildings and Maramureș gates, and some homesteads are furnished with original pieces.

A pavilion displays crafts, folk costume, furniture, textiles and ceramics from the Iza Valley, Săcel, Vama, Baia Mare and Lăpuș. The museum runs workshops where children learn weaving, clay modelling, wood carving and painting, and the visit can be made with a free audio guide in Romanian, through the izi.TRAVEL app, with QR codes on the houses.

### Good to know

The museum is open daily, but in winter it closes earlier, at 16:00. The village is on a hill, ~3.5 km from the town centre, and the visit is outdoors.
