## About Ceahlău Massif

The Ceahlău rises on its own above Lake Izvorul Muntelui, in the Eastern Carpathians, in Neamț County. It is a mountain of hard conglomerate, with a high plateau almost 6 km long, edged by cliffs: to the south it ends at Ocolașul Mare (1,907 m), the highest peak, and to the north at Toaca (1,904 m), with a weather station on its summit. Rain and wind have carved towers and needles of rock in strange shapes along the edge of the plateau, and around them grew the legends that made it known as the “holy mountain” of Moldavia: Baba Dochia, Panaghia, Detunatele, Claia lui Miron, Turnul lui Budu.

The central part of the massif has been protected since 1955, and today the Ceahlău National Park covers 7,742.5 ha, an IUCN category II protected area run by Neamț County Council. Besides the rocks, the park keeps old spruce and beech forests, alpine meadows with rare flowers, from edelweiss to the lady's slipper orchid, and large animals: bears, red deer, lynx, chamois. The Ocolașul Mare plateau is a scientific reserve, so the highest peak cannot be climbed; hikers go up Toaca.

### What you can see

Almost every trail climbs to the Dochia Chalet (1,750 m), on the plateau between the Lespezi and Toaca peaks; next to it stands the hermitage dedicated to the Transfiguration, where thousands of pilgrims climb on 6 August. From the resort of Durău, the shortest route (red stripe) passes the Fântânele Chalet, Cușma Dorobanțului and the Panaghia rock, below Toaca, while the other (red cross) climbs past the Duruitoarea Waterfall and Piciorul Șchiop. From Izvorul Muntelui, the blue-stripe trail runs below Detunatele and past Piatra cu Apa, and the red-stripe one climbs through Poiana Maicilor onto the Ocolașul Mic plateau. From Toaca you look over Lake Izvorul Muntelui and the ridges of the Eastern Carpathians far into the distance.

### Good to know

Entry to the park is allowed only with the visitor fee paid and only on the marked trails. In January 2026, three trails to the Dochia Chalet were officially certified after improvement works: the one from Durău via Duruitoarea, the one from the village of Neagra and the one from Izvorul Muntelui through Poiana Maicilor. The weather changes quickly, fog is frequent all year and it can snow on the plateau in any month; in winter the stretch between Duruitoarea and the Dochia Chalet is not recommended. Bears live in the forests of the massif.

## Don't miss

- Toaca Peak (1,904 m), a short climb from the Dochia Chalet, with a view towards Lake Izvorul Muntelui.
- The rocks on the edge of the plateau, such as Panaghia, Detunatele or Claia lui Miron, each with its own legend.
- The Duruitoarea Waterfall, with its two steps, on the red-cross trail from Durău.
- Poiana Maicilor, with the rocky cliffs above it, on the trail from Izvorul Muntelui to the Ocolașul Mic plateau.
- The park's visitor centre at Izvorul Muntelui, with an interactive exhibition and a film about the mountain.
