## About Vaser Valley Forest Railway (Mocănița)

The Mocănița at Vișeu de Sus is a 760 mm narrow-gauge railway built from 1932 to bring timber out of the forests of the Vaser Valley, where logs had previously gone down the river on rafts. The line follows the water through tight gorges, across bridges and round bends that an ordinary train could never take. It has carried timber right up to the present day and, since the 2000s, tourist trains too; it is a listed historic monument (LMI code MM-II-a-B-21017).

Visitors ride the 21.6 km section between the station in Vișeu de Sus and Paltin, at about 640 m above sea level. The train is hauled by one of the railway's steam locomotives, built between 1910 and 1954, among them Mărița, the oldest, made in Berlin, and Elveția or Bavaria, which came from Reșița. Return trip with stops, a day out takes about 5½ to 6 hours.

### What you can see

The carriages are vintage wooden ones, with windows that only the crew open, and the scenery slides past slowly: beech and fir forest, steep slopes, the stony bank of the Vaser, in places only a step from the train. Halfway along, the train stops to take on water, then climbs to Paltin, where it waits about an hour and a half: you can have lunch at the pavilions there, visit a small museum on the history of the Vaser Valley. At the station in Vișeu de Sus, the Maramureș Village gathers traditional houses from the area.

### Good to know

Tickets are best bought online well in advance: in season and at weekends they sell out. The train runs daily from April to October and only Thursday to Sunday in winter. Any locomotive can be swapped for a diesel at the last minute, at no change in price, and departure times are sometimes moved on holidays. Beyond Paltin the line continues to Coman station, but that section is reserved for timber trains.

## Don't miss

- The steam locomotive with vintage wooden carriages puffing through gorges and over bridges, just metres from the Vaser river.
- The stop at Paltin of about an hour and a half, with lunch at the pavilions and a small museum on the history of the Vaser Valley.
- The locomotive museum and the Maramureș Village at Vișeu de Sus station, with traditional houses moved here.
- The halfway stop, where the locomotive refills its water from a pond beside the track.
