## About Movile Cave

Movile Cave lies on the edge of Mangalia, a few kilometres from the Black Sea coast. It was discovered in 1986 by Cristian Lascu, at the bottom of a shaft dug for geological surveys. The cave has no natural entrance: thick layers of clay and loess have sealed it off from the surface, and its galleries, a horizontal maze of about 240 m, are partly flooded by thermal waters rich in hydrogen sulphide. The voids began to form about 5.5 million years ago and are still forming today, as sulphuric acid dissolves the limestone.

The air in the cave holds far less oxygen than outside, a few per cent of carbon dioxide, 1–2% methane and ammonia, at a constant 21 °C and almost 100% humidity. With no light, the ecosystem's food is produced by bacteria that oxidise sulphur and methane and form films on the water and the walls. Movile was the first chemosynthesis-based underground ecosystem ever discovered, presented in 1996 in the journal *Science*.

More than 50 invertebrate species live in the cave, 37 of them found nowhere else: leeches, spiders, myriapods, isopods, a snail and the blind water scorpion *Nepa anophthalma*, the only water scorpion adapted to life underground. Researchers are still describing new species.

### What you can see

The cave cannot be visited, and on the surface there is only the closed access shaft, in a field on the edge of town. The cave belongs to the Natura 2000 site "Mlaștina Hergheliei – Obanul Mare și Peștera Movilei": nearby, [Mlaștina Hergheliei](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/mlastina-hergheliei) has sulphurous springs bubbling with methane, visible from the roadside. Also close by are [Mangalia](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/mangalia), with [Callatis Citadel](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/cetatea-callatis), and [Limanu Cave](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/pestera-limanu).

### Good to know

Access is only through a shaft about 18 m deep, closed by an airtight gate so that the cave air does not mix with the air outside. Only researchers with permission go in, a few times a year. Rubbish is often dumped on the field track to the shaft and is cleared periodically by the local authorities.

## Don't miss

- The lightless ecosystem, fed by bacteria that oxidise sulphur and methane.
- The blind water scorpion Nepa anophthalma, the only water scorpion adapted to cave life.
- The 37 invertebrate species that live only here.
- The sulphurous springs bubbling with methane in Mlaștina Hergheliei, part of the same protected site.
