## About Muntele Mic

Muntele Mic is a mountain resort in Caraș-Severin county, set on a plateau at about 1,600 m, on the slopes of the massif of the same name, east of Caransebeș. The massif belongs to the Retezat-Godeanu group of the Southern Carpathians and borders the Țarcu, Godeanu and Retezat mountains; Muntele Mic Peak, its highest point, rises above 1,800 m. The place began to be used for tourism in the 1930s, when locals built the first chalets here for visitors.

Administratively, most of the resort lies within the commune of Turnu Ruieni, which also includes the village of Borlova, through which the access road runs. In winter Muntele Mic is one of the ski destinations of the Banat, with slopes on the bare pastures above the forest; in summer it becomes a starting point for hikes across the surrounding plateaus and ridges.

### What you can see

The resort's guesthouses and chalets are scattered along the edge of an open plateau, between spruce forest and the alpine pastures that climb towards the summit. The ski area, run mostly by weSKI, has five slopes between about 1,400 and 1,800 m, served by two chairlifts and three drag lifts. The longest, Vâlsanu, descends along several variants to the bottom of the six-seat chairlift; Felix and Borlova are blue runs, suitable for beginners, and Vâlsanu and Nordica are also open for night skiing.

On the pasture above the resort stands the Heroes' Cross, and from the broad summit plateau, where a few antennas stand, the view reaches the high ridges around. In summer, hikes set off from the resort towards Țarcu Peak, towards Cuntu and towards Lake Poiana Mărului.

### Good to know

The lifts run depending on snow and weather: in winters with little snow the start of the season is delayed, and the snow cannons cannot cover all the slopes. The Vâlsanu chairlift has one day a week set aside for technical maintenance, and the Isai chairlift has a separate operator. The resort is reached by the county road from Caransebeș; when the upper car park fills up, cars are left in the car parks further down, from where the ski area operator provides free transport.

## Don't miss

- The run down the Vâlsanu slope, the longest in the ski area, with the ride back up on the six-seat chairlift.
- Night skiing on Friday and Saturday evenings on the Vâlsanu and Nordica slopes.
- The view from the summit plateau of Muntele Mic, above 1,800 m, towards the ridges around.
- The Heroes' Cross, on the pasture above the resort.
- Summer hikes towards Țarcu Peak, towards Cuntu and towards Lake Poiana Mărului.

## Good to know before you go

### Getting there

**By car:** from Caransebeș take the DN68 and continue on the DJ608A, through Zervești, Turnu Ruieni and Borlova; the last stretch climbs in hairpins through the forest up to the resort: ~38 km (~45 minutes). From Reșița it is ~81 km (~1 hour 35 minutes), via Caransebeș, and from Timișoara ~150 km (~2 hours 20 minutes), on the motorway as far as Caransebeș. In winter the road is cleared of snow, but it may still be snow-covered: carry chains or winter tyres and check the road conditions before you set off.

### Where to park

The main car park is at 1,600 m, in the resort. When it fills up, cars are left in the additional car parks further down (P1, P2), from where the ski area operator provides free transport up; on snowy weekends the upper car park fills up quickly.

### Fees & discounts

Entry to the resort is free. A 1-day ski pass for the Vâlsanu chairlift and the Nordica drag lift costs 190 lei (reduced 140 lei), 2 days 310 lei, 3 days 450 lei; for the Nordica drag lift only, 140 lei a day (reduced 110 lei). The joint ski pass for all five lifts, including the Isai chairlift and the Felix and Borlova drag lifts, costs 210 lei a day (reduced 160 lei), 350 lei for 2 days and 500 lei for 3 days. 2-hour and 4-hour passes and a night-skiing pass (90 lei) are also sold; the card deposit is 20 lei.
