# Museums and memorial houses — tourist attractions in Romania

> Museums, collections and memorial houses.

Museums in Romania range from the large national collections of Bucharest, Iași, Cluj-Napoca and Sibiu to small village museums and the memorial houses of writers, musicians and politicians. Many of them are housed in castles, palaces and fortresses, so a single visit covers both the building and the collection. A category of their own are the open-air museums, with peasant homesteads moved here from every part of the country, and the memorial museums devoted to recent history.

[Brukenthal Palace](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/palatul-brukenthal) in Sibiu is one of the oldest museums in Romania, and the [ASTRA Museum](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/muzeul-civilizatiei-populare-traditionale-astra), in the same area, is the country's largest open-air museum. In [Maramureș](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/region/maramures), the [Sighet Memorial](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/memorialul-sighet) documents communist repression. In Bucharest, [Cotroceni Palace](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/palatul-cotroceni) and [Primăverii Palace](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/palatul-primaverii) can be visited as museums, while the [Palace of Culture in Iași](https://peplaiuri.ro/en/palatul-culturii-iasi) brings four museums under one roof.
