## About Museum of Art Collections

Romanit Palace stands on the corner of Calea Victoriei (then Podul Mogoșoaiei) and Calea Griviței. It was begun by the boyar C. Faca and, after his death, finished by the Greek treasurer Romanit, who fitted it out with sumptuous interiors. From 1836 it belonged to the state: first it housed the chancery of the administrative Court, then the Ministry of Finance, which added two wings, hence the building's wide U shape. It was restored between 2008 and 2013.

The museum was inaugurated in 1978 as a section of the National Museum of Art of Romania. Its collections come from donations by collectors and artists, most of them from Bucharest, beginning in 1927, and the more than 30 collections on permanent display show the taste of a Bucharest society from the early 20th century to nearly the present day. The rooms are arranged to suggest the layout and atmosphere of each collection.

### What you can see

Modern Romanian painting and sculpture fill an important part of the route, with works by Theodor Aman, Nicolae Grigorescu, Ioan Andreescu, Nicolae Tonitza, Gheorghe Petrașcu, Theodor Pallady, Lucian Grigorescu, Iosif Iser, Camil Ressu, Francisc Șirato, Alexandru Ciucurencu and Dimitrie Ghiață. Alongside them are European and Japanese prints and drawings, French furniture, decorative art, **Oriental carpets and objects** and folk icons from Transylvania.

In the vaulted cellars of the wing facing Calea Griviței is the **lapidarium**: three rooms with gravestones, inscriptions, door and window frames and columns from old monuments of Wallachia, lost to the urban redevelopment of the 19th century and of 1977–1987. In the inner courtyard, among the benches around a fountain, statues are displayed in the open air.

### Good to know

The opening days differ from those of the MNAR headquarters in the Royal Palace: the museum is open on Monday, Tuesday and Friday, and closed on Wednesday and Thursday. The ticket is bought separately from the one for the Royal Palace, but there is also a combined ticket with the MNAR headquarters.

## Don't miss

- The Oriental room, with prayer rugs, painted wall panelling, furniture and metalwork from the Near East.
- The lapidarium in the vaulted cellars, with gravestones and door frames from old monuments of Wallachia.
- Paintings by Nicolae Grigorescu, Ștefan Luchian, Theodor Pallady and Gheorghe Petrașcu from the donated collections.
- The room with anonymous 19th-century Romanian portraits, furnished with period pieces.
- The inner courtyard with a fountain and statues, surrounded by the palace's 19th-century façades.
