## About Cucuteni Museum of Eneolithic Art

The Gheorghe Dumitroaia Cucuteni Museum of Eneolithic Art opened on 24 June 2005, on the town's feast day, and belongs to the Neamț National Museum Complex. It is both an archaeology museum and an art museum: it shows only prestige pieces of the Cucuteni civilisation, which lived between about 5000 and 3500 BC in Moldavia, south-eastern Transylvania and north-eastern Muntenia, as well as in today's Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. The Piatra Neamț complex holds the richest Cucuteni collection found in Romania. Since 2026 the Cucuteni–Trypillia civilisation has been on the UNESCO Tentative List, in a joint nomination by Romania, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.

The building, a listed historic monument, was designed by the architect Roger Bolomey and built in 1927–1928 in the Neo-Romanian style, with decoration by the Italian artist Vincenzo Puschiasis. It housed the Petrodava Bank and then, after nationalisation, the National Bank until 2004. It stands at the edge of the Princely Court, next to the church and tower of Stephen the Great from the end of the 15th century. The International Research Centre for the Cucuteni Culture, founded in 1995, works in the same building.

### What you can see

The exhibition has two parts: **decorative art**, meaning the pots painted in white, red and black with symmetrically arranged spirals and meanders, and **figurative art**, meaning the figurines of people and animals. Among the best-known pieces of the collection are the **Frumușica Round Dance**, a vessel stand with figures holding hands, the **Council of the Goddesses** from Poduri and the Thinker of Târpești. Some pieces occasionally travel to temporary exhibitions in Romania and abroad. The building is worth a look from outside too, with its tower and the glazed ceramic decoration under the eaves, especially from the Princely Court side.

## Don't miss

- The Frumușica Round Dance, the vessel stand with human figures holding hands, one of the best-known Cucuteni pieces.
- The Council of the Goddesses from Poduri, the group of female clay figurines found at the site on Ghindaru Hill.
- The pots painted in three colours, white, red and black, with spirals and meanders covering the whole body of the vessel.
- The Neo-Romanian façade of the former Petrodava Bank, with its tower and glazed ceramics, seen from the Princely Court and Stephen the Great's tower.
