## About Cucuteni Archaeological Site Museum

The site museum at Cucuteni protects in place one of the mounds of a Geto-Dacian tumulus necropolis from the 4th century BC, on Gosan Hill, at the northern edge of the village. Archaeologists from the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași noticed the necropolis in the 1960s, excavated the first mound in 1967 and three more between 1979 and 1988. In the largest and best-preserved mound they found a circular stone enclosure with a main cremation grave, attributed to a Getic chieftain, and three secondary graves.

So that the mound could stay in place, a circular building of natural stone was raised over it between 1982 and 1984, with no central pillars and a roof on a metal frame. The museum belongs to the Museum of the History of Moldavia within the Moldova National Museum Complex of Iași. The place is linked to two famous finds: the site on Cetățuia Hill, found in 1884, which gave its name to the Eneolithic Cucuteni culture and its painted pottery, and the Băiceni Treasure, more than 70 Geto-Dacian prestige objects, found on Laiu Hill a few hundred metres away. Since 2026 the Cucuteni–Trypillia civilisation has been on the UNESCO Tentative List, in a joint nomination by Romania, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.

### What you can see

On both levels there is an exhibition of local history, from the Palaeolithic to the 19th century, focusing on the Cucuteni and Thraco-Getic finds.
