## About Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania

The Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania, the first ethnographic museum in Romania, was founded in 1922 and officially began operating on 1 January 1923; its first director was Romulus Vuia. After several premises in the city, in 1957 it was given the historic Reduta building on Strada Memorandumului, in the centre of Cluj. This page is about the exhibition in the Reduta; the museum's open-air section, the "Romulus Vuia" National Ethnographic Park, is visited separately, on the edge of the city.

The building has a longer history than the museum. In the Middle Ages three houses stood on the site, and a Renaissance doorframe from the early 17th century survives from one of them. In the 18th century it housed the inn known as the "White Horse", then an officers' school, and the city regained the building in 1794 and rebuilt it over the following decades. The "Reduta" hall, whose name comes from the French "redoute", meaning a dance hall, hosted sessions of the Transylvanian Diet, concerts by musicians such as Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms, Béla Bartók and George Enescu and, in 1894, the Memorandum Trial, at which Ioan Rațiu spoke the words "The existence of a people is not debated, it is affirmed!". In 1897 the city's first film screening took place here.

### What you can see

The permanent exhibition, "Folk Culture in Transylvania – 18th–20th Centuries", opened in 2006, selects pieces from the more than 40,000 in the museum's collections and follows the life of the traditional village. It begins with the oldest occupations, gathering from nature, hunting, fishing and beekeeping, then moves on to farming and animal husbandry, with tools arranged in the order of the work processes, complemented by archive photographs.

The crafts are grouped by raw material: wood, clay, metal, fur, leather, wool and textile plants, with a corner devoted to the household processing of wool and fibres. There are also sections on traditional food, with 19th-century gingerbread moulds, and on folk costume, with pieces from the late 19th century from the Făgăraș Land, the Mărginimea Sibiului, Oaș, Maramureș, Năsăud or the Székely Land, alongside jewellery from Bihor, the Banat and the Hațeg Land.

### Good to know

Temporary exhibitions are also held in the building, with tickets that may differ from that for the permanent exhibition.
