## About National Museum of Romanian Literature

The National Museum of Romanian Literature was founded in 1957 by Dumitru Panaitescu-Perpessicius. Today's permanent exhibition, opened in 2017, is on Strada Nicolae Crețulescu 8, in an early 20th-century house where the family of General Leon Mavrocordat, head of the Royal Military House between 1909 and 1918, lived from 1906. The former premises on Bulevardul Dacia can no longer be visited.

The museum's collections exceed 300,000 items, including manuscripts by Mihai Eminescu, Vasile Alecsandri, Titu Maiorescu, I. L. Caragiale, Ion Creangă and Lucian Blaga. They make up an exhibition conceived as a "museum of the word", with content suited to children, young people and adults.

### What to see

The house has four levels, and the exhibition follows the literary genres: poetry on the ground floor, prose, essays, literary history and criticism on the upper floor, drama in the attic. Each room sets writers' manuscripts, books, photographs and personal belongings in dialogue with the architecture of the house, with paintings and with sculpture. Modern installations (holodeck, holopixel, interactive screens) complete the story, and the ceilings of the salons keep ornaments with gilded frames.

The audio guides are adapted to different ages, and for visitors with special needs there are guides in sign language and in Braille. The museum has a bookshop and a souvenir shop.

### Good to know

Tickets are bought at the reception or online. A visit with a museum guide must be booked at least a day ahead, and tours in English, French or Spanish require a booking. The museum also has a temporary-exhibition space at Calea Griviței 64–66 and runs several memorial houses (Minulescu, Bacovia, Arghezi, Rebreanu and others), each with its own opening hours.
