## About George Enescu National Museum – Cantacuzino Palace

The palace at 141 Calea Victoriei was built between 1901 and 1903 for Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino, known as “the Nabob”, a former mayor of the capital and prime minister, to plans by the architect Ion D. Berindey, in the French Beaux-Arts style, with a few Neo-Rococo rooms. For the decoration Cantacuzino called on the artists of the day: the murals carry the signatures of G. D. Mirea, Nicolae Vermont, Costin Petrescu and Arthur Verona, the sculptures are by Emil Wilhelm Becker, and the tapestries, chandeliers, lamps and stained glass come from the Krieger house in Paris.

The Peace of Bucharest was signed here on 10 August 1913. After the Nabob's death, the palace passed to his son Mihail and Mihail's wife Maria, known as Maruca, who later remarried George Enescu. After the composer's death in 1955, Maria donated the property to the state for a museum bearing his name; the “George Enescu” Museum has been here since 19 June 1956. The building is a historic monument (LMI code B-II-m-A-19869).

### What you can see

The palace is closed to visitors, so what can be seen now is the exterior. From Calea Victoriei, over the wrought-iron fence, you can see the light-coloured façade with its round pediment and the Cantacuzino coat of arms, the sculpted groups on the roof, the wrought-iron balconies and the glass canopy over the entrance, guarded by two stone lions.

Inside, the museum presents Enescu's life in chronological order over a route of three rooms, through photographs, manuscripts, musical instruments, personal objects and documents. Behind the palace stands the house where Enescu and Maria lived in 1945–1946, now a memorial house.

### Good to know

The palace and the memorial house behind it are closed to visitors for consolidation and restoration; in October 2026 the works resumed, with emergency repairs to the façade facing the inner courtyard. The museum carries on its activity at the “George Enescu” Memorial House in Sinaia and at the branch in Tescani, open Tuesday to Sunday.
